Well a small update, I had a hiccup with the title transfer so I put everything on hold. But today it was resolved, so to the junkyard Thursday (payday) to get a t case!!!
Finally its out!!!! You don't have to touch the torsion bars to remove it, all I did was jack the tranny as high as it would go, remove the trans x-member and since my exhaust bolts were rusted tight, I cut the crossover pipe that runs between the t-case and the tranny. Now the wait starts for...
Optimistic about tomorrow, I scored a hacksaw tonight at the local Wally World, so hopefully ill be posting about the damn transfercase finally being out lol, fingers crossed! And yes I'm wishing it was a 4X2 right about now!
Well no, I suck, I been kinda busy, but I squeezed in a little wrenching yesterday. I had the bright idea of trying to remove the tailshaft housing to try and get some clearence, I got all of the bolts out but one, and of course that one stripped out. So I'm gonna go back with a hacksaw and cut...
So I did work on the Expy Thursday, at the advice of a local mechanic, I removed the transmission crossmember and unbolted the t case believing that I could squeeze it between the exhaust and the torsion bar crossmember....WRONG!!! The tailshaft of the t case is up against the floor of the truck...
I am currently trying to replace the transfer case in my 98 Expedition (also have a build thread) and at the advice of a local mechanic, I removed the transmission crossmember with the assumption that the t case would be able to come out between the exhaust and the torsion bar...
Yeah the 285's ain't the best but at least I'll feel a little safer when I actually get to drive it to a tire shop, the existing tires have the cords showing. But I'm off tomorrow... or today actually, so I plan on making some real progress!
I'm currently in the process of removing the old T Case (first time working on a 4WD). So anways, here's a couple of pics as she sits now....
My slow progress so far, yes I'm embarrassed!!
Quite a few miles on the clock....
So I start cleaning the severely neglected Expy out, three 30 gallon bags of trash later, I'm left with some carpet stains and a ridiculous amount of M&Ms and Skittles on the floor. I cleaned every interior panel untill I got it looking good, Tough Stuff is amazing!
I already posted this on Member's Rides, but I wanted to go ahead and start a build thread on my 98 Expy XLT 4X4. The story starts when my mother in law borrowed her neighbor's Expy and it broke down in my yard. I let it sit there for a couple weeks then the owner said he'd take $800 for it...
Well, I got done at the shop and decided to bring some tools home and crawl under it to finish pullung the t case, but my house is in a huge open field, and that damn wind blowing off of the mountains at like 45mph and it is cold as all get out. So here's hoping for warmer weather tomorrow...
It will be once I figure out how to get the T case out, the Expy was seriously ragged out by the previous owner, I had to clean 3 30 gallon trashbags worth of trash out of it and it still needs a good vaccuuming and carpet shampooing. The t case didn't have a drop of oil in it when I got it.
Here is my project (unfortunately) $800 98 XLT 4x4 Expy
Nevermind the flat tire, the next pic has the solution
Four 285's I scored for $75!!!
And...I'm in the process of replacing the T Case
I'm currently in the middle of a transfer case swap, and I need a few pointers on how to remove the torsion bars so I can remove the crossmember, and help or ideas you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
I have a 98 XLT 4WD and my T-case is shot due to the previous owner running it dry, I'm attempting to replace it and I had a few questions.
1. Can I remove it without messing with the torsion bars?
2. If not, what all is involved with the torsion bars to make room for the T case to come out...
Hi everyone I'm new here, I have a 1998 Expedition XLT 4X4. Unfortunately it is a project due to the previous owner running the transfer case dry, therefore frying it. I'm in the process of pulling the old case out, and I'd gladly appreciate any tips or pointers because its definitely a learning...
