I consistently tow at 60 mph. My mileage in the Pacific Northwest (read mountains) averages 11 mpg. I just keep remembering that I’m not paying for hotels!
All I need it to do is keep up with my fridge when it's running off battery while rolling down the road...20A should be plenty. Curious how you ran your wiring from the alternator/start battery. Some have said ya get better amperage by running the wires directly to the charger rather than going...
I've got the HD tow package for sure. I can't see a data plate on my alternator. I'm curious what the amperage output for that thing is. For the trailer folks out there, that 7-pin connector (on any tow vehicle) doesn't carry much in the way of current for keeping the house battery(ies) charged...
Has anyone added a dc to dc house battery charger to their Expy? The existing cable provides very little amperage to the house battery(ies) while towing. I'm curious how you wired it from the Expy's alternator.
I don't know if you're already doing this, but after hitching up and locking the pawl onto the ball, I crank the tongue up as far as I can. At this point I tighten the Andersen chains until I have about 7-8 threads showing...at any rate...tight! I used to tighten the chains right after dropping...
I'm thinking of adding a dc to dc charger to boost the amps going to my trailer house batteries while rollin' down the highway. I've noticed that the fridge running on the 12-volt system doesn't really stay that cold. And it's been said the a dc-dc charger will give the house batteries longer...
I’ve got 2014 with full tow package. Used primarily for towing camping trailer…3500 lbs. Bought from Enterprise at 35k, now has 78k. So far no issues. Always on top of maintenance. Love the power fold down 3rd row seats!
I think my Defenders are going on 3 years. Very satisfied. I check pressure and rotate on a regular schedule. I’m towing about 3500 lbs. Pressure stays at 35 psi. towing or not.
FordTechMakuloco recommends 5W-30 for this gen. I’ve been running 5W-20 up to 77000 with no loss of power or mileage so far. Oil gets changed on schedule.
My Expy lives in the Pacific Northwest where average temperatures in summer usually stay in the 70s with occasional jumps up into the 90s for a couple of weeks. FordTechMakuloco in his YouTube video "This is Why Maintaining the Ford 5.4L 3V Triton Engine is So Important" 5 years ago, he stated...
Nice setup! Thanks for the first-hand report. I’ve been towing a 3500 lb trailer for about 8 years with my 2014 LTD with tow package rated to tow 9200 lbs. Never a problem. That said, I need to look for a good used later model like yours. I have the dreaded 5.4L, 3V Triton V-8. So far so good.
Good find! Mine is a 2014 LTD with full tow package. Coming up on 76k. Love how it tows. Sparkly grey… One of the selling points was the automatic 3rd row fold down seats.
FWIW…my 2014 LTD has a tow package, including an external xmsn cooler. I tow a 3500 lb trailer. I don’t have a xmsn temp gauge, but when I’m towing on flats or hills the coolant gauge needle stays locked in the same spot throughout a trip regardless of OAT.
I can't advise you on how to proceed, but this roller follower issue with the 5.4L 3V Triton has come to my attention. I've got about 76,000 on my 2014 and don't yet have any loud ticking noises coming from the valve cover on either side. Follower replacement isn't something I can do given lack...
Our 2014 (3rd Gen) with HD tow has the 3.73. BTW, we bought it from Enterprise Car Sales. They went out of their way to fix/replace everything that 30K miles of rental use had on it. Got 77K on it now. My dream SUV!
So, hooked up in my driveway with engine running I placed a magnetic compass near my trailer brake drums. I had my wife press the Expy’s brake pedal. It took about 3-5 seconds for the compass to swing. I could also hear the brakes buzzing. Is this what is meant by “proportional?” Because a 3-5...
In Tow/Haul the xmsn in my 2014 automatically downshifts without pressing brakes. Sometimes it will downshift to 3500-4000 rpm at which point the engine is screaming so I’ll press brakes steadily and lightly to override it. I learned to never pulse tap the brakes as that interferes with the ABS.
Pretty sure I’m getting a new one, but first I wanted to eliminate if I had a phantom draw issue. After running DIY test with my multimeter, concluded that’s not an issue. Hello new battery!
