Yes bad pick is right. I should have checked it out more thoroughly. The spark plug problem was likely due to over torquing by the prior owner who had the good sense to get rid of it when he learned of the problem (1 plug hole apparently was repaired before I bought it). But here's the thing...

This is a great site and the members are awesome. However the 5.4 triton engine and thus the 97 Expedition, with its nonstop spark plug problems, was the worst car I've ever owned. I paid $1800 for a running vehicle with 200K miles on it. Spark plugs started blowing within 6 months. After an...

2001 Eddie Bauer 5.4 possible plug issues?

Mine's a 1997 XLT with the 5.4 Triton 8 cylinder engine, and it is well known to have this spark plug problem.

2001 Eddie Bauer 5.4 possible plug issues?

Agree strongly you should make sure it's running right. If a coil pack needs replaced, then by all means. I disagree however on changing the plugs and coil packs if it's running properly now. The triton spark plug problem is well known and the proper repair to stripped threads is expensive and...

Got myself a 5.4, now what?

My son and his GF did't have any idea what an injector and coil pack looked like, at 5 pm New Years Eve in the middle of the Cascade Mountains on I90. I got the phone call, and we had to find a 30 mile tow because I didnt want a fire or engine damage. Trust me it was a PITA.

2001 Eddie Bauer 5.4 possible plug issues?

In my (1997 XLT) case, rattling and misfire were the first symptoms of the spark plug ejecting from the engine. It didn't take long before rattling led to further loosening, cylinder pressure violently ejecting the plug, and with it, snapping off the head of the coil pack on its way out. If you...

Got myself a 5.4, now what?

Are you familiar with the 5.4L modular engine and it's spark plug problem? I wouldn't change coil packs, and I especially wouldn't change the plugs. Left us stranded 3 times. Royal PITA, but fixable.

P0446 code, what to look for?

Hi, new member here. First posting, besides my intro. So please be kind. I've owned my 1997 Expedition XLT for about 18 months. Recently it has developed a P0446 engine code and CEL. From what I read, this is probably a plugged canister vent pipe or dirty / malfunctioning evap control...

Hi, new member, registering so I can learn more about my 1997 Expedition. Owned about 18 months. I do most of the medium to light duty maintenance on all my cars. On my (5.4L, 4WD, 222K miles) Expy, I've had two problems. Primarily, I've had 2 spark plug blowouts. After the first one, I...
