Sorry for the late update. I got it done yesterday and she's all washed inside and out now. It's good to have my "truck" back.
I had to do it twice... I started it up last Thursday and it wouldn't idle and ran rough. Definitely got the timing wrong. I know why too. I never took the rockers out...
Not much noise on startup that I noticed. We 18 miles per gallon on an 18 hour drive. We heard some house while running while on vacation. Then on the way home it was down on power the whole trip. 12 mpg the while way home. We thought it was bad gas but it didn't change when we fueled up again...
It took the day off work to finish putting the engine back together. Got it all buttoned up, put some fresh oil in it, primed it and it started right up. It ran really rough with no valve train noise. It would rev but it wouldn't idle very well. It didn't die but almost. Check engine light...
Yep... I spun it over a few times by hand just to make sure it was smooth.
I'm just glad it's not a DOHC engine.
It's actually not too bad to work on. I can lay on the top or I can sit up on the ground in front of the engine.
Right now I'm reasarching the best way to get the roller followers...
I started reassembly. Progress has been slow. It's so hot in FL I don't want to work in the driveway
Got the new cam and oil pump in. Then I timed the engine, and put the new tensioners on. All that's left is to install the rockers and put the covers on.
Yep... think low oil pressure, not no oil pressure.
Apparently a common problem on these trucks. I found all metal Melling tensioners that have no seals to fail. That coupled with the high volume oil pump will hopefully be a permanent fix.
No... Timing chain tensioner seals (I should've said seals).
When the seals break, the oil drains back to the pan causing lower oil pressure. That's why the cam failure.
Thanks. I appreciate that. I'll update my progress here as it happens.
Never know what happened to this engine before I got it. I've only had it 6 months.
I'm not going to do the chains and phasers now just due to the cost. The Ford kit is over $800. They seem to be fine. Really, there is very...
I finally had time to start disassembly.
Found a bad roller follower and the cam shaft lobe is bad. To replace the cam I have to remove the cam chain so I might as well install the upgraded oil pump too.
Looks like about $350 on Rockauto and probably 2-3 weeks (nights and weekends) worth of...
Yeah... As long as the cam isn't damaged. Hoping it's just an adjuster or follower.
He mentions installing a high volume oil pump and replaceing the tentioners too. Has anyone here done that? Overkill?
Thanks... I think you're right on.
I found the Makuloco videos on YouTube. He has videos on the roller follower and adjuster faliures. He also mentions the tentioner gasket failures that cause reduced oil pressure to the right bank.
I think I can do this job myself. It will take me some time...
I just got home from a 3k Mile road trip. Averaged 18 mpg there and 13 mpg home... fully loaded both ways. The engine had much less power on the way home. It had to drop 2 gears to go up a hill or pass someone. It still ran pretty smooth, it would still rev but with much less power.
I could hear...
New problem with my '11 Expy xlt...
The lights on my steering wheel (cruise, volume, phone) are out. The controls still work. Also, the puddle lights under the mirrors and the console transmission idicator lights are out.
I fuse #10 controls these and was blown. I replaced it with a good fuse...
My '11 Expy has the v8.
My '15 Transit 250 (work van) has the Ecoboost. 77k miles and still flawless.
I too wonder about the longevity of the turbo engine. Will they be reliable to 300k like the v8s?
Thanks. I looked on Rockauto but I only found the one for the dial type temp setting. Mine is the climate control. I'll check this one out.
Yeah... I could be a problem. Or, just a bad connection that got hot. I guess I'll see if I replace the plug and it happens again. I've got it tight for...
My front blower went out yesterday. After reading about the blower resistor I checked it out. It turned out to be a loose connection. When I wiggled it, it turned on.
The plug looks like it got hot. Even though it's working I want to make sure theres not a bad connection that will smoke the...
My 2011 has the jukebox feature. It says I can load music from CDs but I don't have any. 10 gig of storage. I would like to utilize it so I don't have to connect Bluetooth everytime I run to the store.
I have had a hard time with parts geek trying to return these Moog struts. They sent me an RMA number but no return sticker. I tried to call them and the customer service rep says "hold on one second" then hung up on me. 2 days later a ups guy shows up at my door for a pickup? The struts we're...
These trucks are all metric right? I had all of my socket sets, metric and sae out when I changed the front struts. I still wasn't sure. I think it's metric but strange sizes like 13mm and 15mm that I don't use often. I had to tap the 21mm on the lug nuts with a hammer then every nut gets stuck...
