Swollen lug nuts. Replace them NOW

Nissan is also bad about this! I found out that they make a 21.5mm specifically for this problem(a 22.5mm is also made for Fords)! I found this out a very painfully hot day took me three hours to change a tire!

    larger size tires

They still look small to me but overall I'm happy.

    larger size tires

I run 295/75r16 BFG KO2s on my '98 with just a little rubbing on the front.

    '98 Limited Slip?

I'm getting ready to upgrade to 4.10 gears and adding a clutch type L/S to the front. Also planning to overhaul the rear factory L/S while I'm in there. My question is is it like the old 9" traction-lock where you can add an extra clutch plate for more grip or maybe Ford offering a performance...

    Rarest Expedition?

One of these, a Coyote drivetrain, and a set of Super Duty axles could make my ultimate dream SUV!

Should it Stay or Should it Go Now?

I look at my repair costs as the payment. Sure I spent $6K doing the engine but what other full size V8 4X4 are you gonna get for that money? Since that I've done rear brakes and a wheel bearing. Totaled up including purchase price, new trans, engine(with all new accessories), Tie-rods...

Poll about 5.4l V8 and mileage

1998 5.4 XLT bought in 2012 with 237,000 with no known history, currently sitting about 300,000. New transmission @ about 250,000, motor, all cooling system, front brakes, all new fluids, bearings etc, at about 280,000 for a 10K mile road trip, All new rear brakes @ about 295,000. Currently...

    PSA: Avoid Eaton/Detroit differentials

I'm running a TruTrac in the D60 front of my Ranger turning 5.38 gears and 39" tires for about 15K miles with no issues.

    Stupid Transfer Case/Transmission question time

I've got a 1998 XLT 5.4/4R100. Here's the back story. About two years ago in 4lo on a VERY steep hill climb I lost some transmission fluid, I replaced it and all was well for a month or so until we went out exploring again and after about three miles in 4lo the trans was slipping and I was...

F250 frame swap on 98 ford expedition

Would be MUCH easier to simply swap the straight axle into the Expedition. I swapped '06 F350 axles into my '99 Ranger and it was comparatively easy. Also I don't want to sound like a know it all but you won't have D60 F&R you'll most likely have a D50F/10.5R. The fact that you don't know...

    DOOR LOCKS/REMOTE

Well age and wear have caught up to my faithful '98 XLT's keys and locks. I'm down to one key and no remote and the key no longer works in the doors leaving me to leave driver's door unlocked all the time. Hoping to get up with a locksmith and get new keys and remotes made, just wanted to ask...

    Regear question

I did the proper break-in with my Ranger, mainly because I had just dropped 10K turning into my personal mini-monster and wasn't about to take a chance on something so silly.

    ‘98 EB 285/75r17

I run 295/75R16 BFG All-Terrains and have the same rubbing issues. 4.11 Gears and front L/S are in the works. Small lift and shocks are on the list but will have to wait until gears are finished!

Well, that explains a lot…. Get a carfax

A friend of mine once had a business rebuilding slavage cars, good work and he was completely honest about what he was selling. 1997 Suzuki Sidekick JLX came in with a crushed tailgate, totalled with salvage title. He bought it from the insurance agency fixed it and had his wife drive it for a...

Steel Spare Tire Rim Rust thoughts

I have a separate cable to secure my spare once in place. Replaced winch cable with SS, whole winch assembly was heavily coated with dry lube protective coating including the piece that holds the tire. I also went with an aluminum rim coated well with corrosion preventative film. When I have...

    2001 Expedition 5.4 Head Gaskets

I faced this decision in March, seeing as I was paying labor(nowhere to tackle large jobs) and the difference in labor was extremely minimal, I chose to replace my 294K motor with a 115K motor and new PS Pump, water pump, hoses, starter, radiator, and all new gaskets on the motor. Add new...

    Lower Radiator Hose AGAIN!

One of the issues I have is that it was a search to find a new hose with the insert in it. It was not available locally, had to be ordered. This is always a problem with short-run, limited wear items. 10 yrs from now there may be no possibility of finding a new insert. It's a problem that...

    Lower Radiator Hose AGAIN!

I have a new OEM hose on the way. As an Engineer, I am not happy with the OEM design, and by nature that puts me to looking at "re-engineering" it! The lack of a retention bump on the radiator outlet, and the fact that the hose isn't quite the right diameter is what led me to question simply...

    Lower Radiator Hose AGAIN!

Yeah, I read that one, and quite a few others. The last entry to that one was 2016. That's why I was asking if any of the people who stated the replaced the connector with a hose clamp if they were still happy with that decision. After all if it's been two years leak free, I would consider...

2000 xlt 200,000 miles bad trans worth fixing?

I personally feel that if the truck is pretty nice otherwise it would be worth 2-3 grand(my '98 was 2K with a 2yr warranty and one free service). Yes, other issues may arise but that may(will) happen with any vehicle. I feel the older models will take way more off-roading than the newer ones...

    Lower Radiator Hose AGAIN!

Since I couldn't find a reasonably recent thread about this abhorrent excuse for a hose connector, and I tested the limits of my faith fighting it this weekend, I thought I'd bring it up again. So has anyone who replaced the stupid connector with good old hose clamps had any long term issues...

    Fender rolling/pulling?

Personally I am absolutely 100% against wheel spacers unless there is a specific need. Looking cool alone isn't worth the extra wear and tear on ball joints, wheel bearings etc! I love that my XP clears 285's with no issues.
