Hey guys I have an 06 Expedition with 140k miles on the clock. The previous owner had it changed at Ford for the first 70k miles and then Midas the last 70k miles.

I am coming up on an oil change and am wondering which brand oils are ok to use?

I have heard some cheap oils leave a residue that more quality oils don't.

I have also heard mixed thoughts of switching to synthetic because it could leak?

Thanks in advance.

In the end it really doesn't matter too much.

Run the correct weight.

Run oil with all of the specifications Ford requires.

Keep the oil clean.

5w30 Chevron - about the cheapest where I live. Motocraft oil filter from Walmart - the best filter IMO.

Change every 5k max. Check the oil weekly. More people kill 5.4s from running out of oil than any other reason.

Changed to 5w20 Mobil 1 Synthetic Extended Performance (15,000) (Walmart approx $29 - 5 qts) about a year ago. I always use Motorcraft oil filter, I change the oil between 5,000 - 7,500, basically when I notice the oil is a darker color, the oil holds up well up to 7,500 (depending on city or highway driving).

I started using Mobile 1 5W-20 when the odometer hit 96,000. I have changed oil and filter never going past 5,000 miles between changes. The odometer is currently at 178,500. No problems. Still has plenty of power. Runs and idles great.

I work for the railroad. They use a jitney service to transport crews. The two yard vehicles are 2nd gen Expys. They run 24/7, rarely get shut off, in dusty conditions. The mileage on one is 200K+. I asked the site manager about maintinance. He said, they use full synthetic, changed at 5000. Ford says, Motorcraft 5w-20 syn-blend, is industry standard for 10+years. I used full-syn 5w-30(recommended weight), in my 2000, always with a good quality filter. I only drive it around 2500mi a year. I change it once a year. It has 103K, no leaks, and I add 1/2 quart every 700mi. It burned more(1/2qt every 500), with 5w20, that dealer put in it..

I use Mobil1 5w-30 along with a mobil1 oil filter and change the oil every six months or 3k whichever comes first.
After looking at different brands of motor oil specifics, I feel the Mobil1 5w-30 is the best choice. Funny thing is that the viscosity of this oil at 100*c is slightly more viscous then the 10w-30. Go figure.
I know this may be overkill, but it is how I maintain all my daily driven vehicles.
