Need help/advice on why this is happening. 98 5.4 when its running the coolant level drops significantly. But then as soon as I shut it off the coolant level rises back up to normal. What could be causing this? Have a 500 mile trip planned this weekend so I need to figure this out.
Thanks.
I took some pictures the best I could.316b5bcff7e089da9c7c04f9ed63c20c.jpg0f9aa6b6ebac7efa288b7dfcb4b6525b.jpgbee163b309aa7605932ff4e0fac76810.jpg

Again this one's out of my comfort zone. One of the others with more electrical diagnosis ability will have to jump in on this one. Wouldn't want to give you wrong info.

Any general ideas on what the issue could be?

Is your Suv overheating? One of three scenarios comes to mind. 1, your intake gasket is leaking, allowing coolant into motor. 2, your head gasket is/ has failed, allowing coolant into motor. 3, you've got a cracked head or cylinder, causing coolant to run into motor. Either of these is trouble. I'd hold off taking your Suv on the trip. Maybe rent a car for now.

Nope not overheating never overheated no leaks or anything no mixing of oil and coolant.
Some people are saying that it is normal but for the 8 years i have owned this truck its never done this.

Air somewhere in the system perhaps. Engine gets hot and sucks in coolant, cools off and it refills overflow? If it was leaking the overflow wouldn't refill. Does the radiator also have a cap to check when cold?

You know come to think of it the other day I was gonna top off the coolant to the max line took the cap off (was cold had been sitting over night) and it made a hissing noise like letting air in or out. Did not have coolant to add so I just put the cap back on . Maybe I got some air in the system?
