Have a 97 Ex with 203k , noticed that after morning start up when first put in drive, seems to lag then tacks up a bit. Then goes on its way. Was thinking about getting the transmissions fluid and filters changed, heard it could be torque converter. But given the age is it worth to do more than a fluid change?

Check fluid level and color - should be a candy color red without a burnt smell.

The auto trans are hydraulic systems. If they are not maintained properly with fluid changes the internal soft parts are usually shot when problems occur. Quick fixes are usually bandaids.

If the fluid level is correct then you are describing low pump pressure. Next time it is cold test how it responds in reverse. Any lag on engagement? Reverse gear requires the highest line pressure of all the gears. If this is fine then you could have internal leaks that reduce pressure to the forward gears.
