How do the Heated and Cooled Seats work?

I have a 2003 EB with the climate controlled seats. I assume that the heated seats work with some sort of heating element, but can someone tell me how the cooled seats work?

    Thanks

Typically cool air is forced through the seats with fans.

    Cooled seat operation

The cooled seats have a fan unit in the bottom of each seat that blows air through ducting to distribute across the bottom and back of the seats. If you look close enough under each seat, you can see the fan unit.

I am disapointed int he A/C seats in my '07 EB. The fans work and there's nothing blocking the ducting under the seat, I just don't get the seats to cool down.

The heated/cooled seats are independent thermo-electric units in each seat, capable of generating warm and cold air on their own. They work similar to a Igloo Koolmate cooler. Thermoelectric modules are constructed from a series of tiny metal cubes of dissimilar exotic metals which are physically bonded together and connected electrically. When electrical current passes through the cube junctions, heat is transferred from one metal to the other. Solid-state thermoelectric modules are capable of transferring large quantities of heat when connected to a heat absorbing device on one side and a heat dissipating device on the other. There are fans under each seat that circulate the heated of cooled air through ducting that flows air through the holes in the seat.
