It is called the gotts mod. I did it and may have increased mileage by 1mpg. I get around 13mpg w 33.5" Goodyear duratraks. I think it is a 2005 f250 snorkel for the air box. Easy mod, cheap part. Negligible difference.

I have the same Expedition as you,, although mine is a 2009 with about the same mileage. I get 13-14 MPG around town checked whenever I fill up. When I take it on the road, I get as high as 18. I would do the plugs, but watch out for broken plugs because yours is in the years - (2004 - 2008) where they came with 2 - piece plugs that would separate and need a special tool to get them out.

There is something wrong with your rig.. I have a 2008 EL and I get 15.5 mpg in mixed driving in a hilly area. I have a 2.5 inch lift up front and 1.5 in the back with 275/65/18's. I got closer to 16.5 with the stock setup.

Not much help pointing out the obvious but I'd go to the dealer and get a 30,000 mile service.

I do a LOT of city-heavy, stop and go, mixed mode driving w/ AC always on.... often with a lot of pedal stomping (recovering BMW driver lol). Lots of stops, engine on and engine off a lot. Lots of people and cargo a lot of the time.

13.3-13.5 mpg overall, 16-17 mpg 80mph interstate freeway, 18-19 slow cruise control state highways

Bad fuel drops it to ~12 mpg.

But that's the somewhat lighter & smaller Expedition SSV....which, however, the previous owner, the USFS, in its infinite wisdom had lifted pretty noticeably --- doubt that's doing me any favors

...are you running Flex Fuel or ethanol-heavy cheapie mix gas? Cuz even the official mpgs for Flex Fuel are stated as something like 10/13, and that's not even for EL

PS mine has ~163k mi, stock small steelie wheels with huge BFG AT K/O all-terrainers @ ~35psi up front, ~38 psi in the rears, usually drive in RWD mode but kick it over to 4A in wet conditions or on gnarly pavement sometimes. Oil was switched to Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5w-40 & doped with LiquiMoly Ceratec, after a short double-change/flush with Motorcraft&Seafoam that flushed out epic amounts of black and nasty in just a few hundred miles.
Air filter replaced several thousand miles back.

I get a combined 13mpg... I drive hard as it sometimes I go to a fire scene with it. But I balance it out with steady highway miles, and I have just under 280K on my 09 regular length.. so...

I noticed that my 05 used to get 10/12 combined mpg in winter and 12/14 combined in the summer. On a long trip at 75 mph I would get 16.5 mpg with 20" 275 60R 20 at 119600 miles. But when I traded it at 146,600 miles I was averaging 9/10 mpg in the winter and 10/12 mpg in the summer. The 75 mph mileage dropped to 14.5 mpg.

I get around 13 local driving, according to the lie-o-meter at least. Really wish I could get it to do a bit better. Maybe summer fuel will improve it.

My 03 (5.4, 3.37s, 4x4) gets anywhere from 10-12 in town and I fell lucky if it gets 15 on the hwy anymore. It has a Gibson cat-back and a K&N intake set-up. I suspect that the tires I'm running (Wrangler ATs) are the major culprit. It did better on the highway with the original 17-inch Conti's but 17-18 is the best it would ever do. I've wondered if a good tune-up, headers, and freer flowing exhaust would help along, but not sure that the cost is worth it simply for an mpg or two...
