I am in the process of installing a new rear main seal in my 97’ 4.6 V8 expedition. I was wondering, should I use lubricant on the outside surface of the seal when pressing it into the aluminum seal housing? I was told by the Ford “parts counter guy” that it goes in dry. That seems counterintuitive to me as the outside surface of the seal is half rubber and half metal. Is there something that I’m not understanding about using lubricant? Also is there supposed to be an air gap between the oil seal and the “oil slinger” that goes in after the seal is installed? I have searched everywhere on the internet and there seems to be no information or instructions on how to perform this job…
