well the shrapnel from the compressor could end up anywhere in the system and clog something, like the orifice tube, or any other component.

What happened to the compressor? Is it locked up? Did you put the proper amount of PAG oil back in?

As far as how much it costs I have been retired from the repair business for some time now, I work an old man's job in an automotive parts suppliers test lab bossing people around and being generally grumpy

I know this post is a little late, but like the others said changing the accumulator is a very good idea. It's a filter that traps debris and junk from entering system, kinda like an air filter. By reusing the old one, some of the old trapped debris may enter a/c system. A little extra cost now may save you down the road.
