Solution for the "bad DVD" message on overhead DVD player

My 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer came with a faulty DVD, showing a "bad DVD" message. I took the unit out and tried to clean the head with a head cleaner DVD, no dice. I then exposed the laser head by taking the bottom cover and circuit board out, then took out the small laser head rail and was able to flip the head around for some real cleaning. Laser was blown with compressed air, then cleaned with an alcohol swab, then unit put back together. Works like a charm now, so don't give up when you see a bad DVD message that will not clear with a DVD cleaning disc. Hope this helps someone.
