transfer case question

Just wondering if anyone knows how to check if the transfer case is locked in 4wd?

with the front wheels off the ground in awd, if i grab the front drive shaft i can't turn it, but if I spin the wheels by hand they go in opposite directions

I got a 99 E.B. with the awd, 4hi and 4lo.

any suggestions?
