As much complaining everyone does the 5.4L 3V is a good engine. The timing set is for sure the weak spot for it. Bottom end on these modular engines is very strong. While I appreciate an old 2 valve the 3 valve fixed a lot of things wrong with it. More power up high with the VCT and a more useable overall power band, improved head gaskets, intake manifold design, etc. The plugs certainly aren’t blowing out of the head like the older ones.......but they may also try to stay in there when you WANT them out lol. Although I must say I found the plug change to be easy. Best way to keep a 3 valve happy is change the oil & filter always and often. While not bulletproof it is a solid platform.

You're a 3rd gen owner, your word doesn't fly with us 2nd gen owners especially the 2005 owners, the 5.4 in its first design with no changes or tweaks is ABSOLUTELY A DISASTER, the timing failing so prematurely is ridiculous, the welded spark plugs are a nightmare of their own & the vct's stalling the motor on low revs is epic nonsense.

@JExpedition07 before you get all pissy I challenge you to go buy a 2005-2006 expedition with it's original spark plugs and timing set and drive it for 12k-15k miles in 12 months or less then come back her and "brag" about how much better these 3v engine are.... matter of fact I bet you by mile mark 7982 ater you buy it you'd have already set it on fire while it's being crushed at the scrap yard...

Henry it's 5:00 here in SF, 7:00 Chicago time, like Jeff said it's coctail time! I used to love the drink cart Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy would wheel out during their show. J, he knows what he speaks the 04-06 first 3 year valvers were a nightmare. You got in on the senior year of high school as far as these motors. Why the hell do we have to be the testing ground for these company's. I had a first year Datsun 240z that was damn near perfect. The Japanese just got it back then. Someday maybe one of them here will get it right.

Weren’t you the one who mentioned your expy didn’t have an oil change for 20k miles or some crazy interval at one point? That’s all I’m contributing to this, have a good one guys. I guess my response may seem pissy but I’m responding to the same attitude. No hard feelings.

LoL it's all just brotherly love , if we all agreed on everything this site would go dead.

But to answer you, yes I can tell when the timing set was getting installed the pervious motor was beat to shit, the replacement motor looked 10× better internally but still gave me nothing but problems!

You cant get around a shit design no matter how hard you try you'll always end up in shit with a first gen 5.4L 3v motor.... always!

Yea man, the original motor with the expedition took a dump, after the timing set installation the bottom end gave out two hours of driving later, swapped in another motor from a rolled over 2004 F150 for an amazing $400 bucks and had confirmed 96k miles on it and heard it ran before we tore it out the f150... should've bought the transmission too he was willing to sell it to me for $100 that day

Can you do the work yourself? For $3500 you can almost get a remanufactured engine... Most shops would be less than 1/2 that to do rhe job. I have a whole set of gears, chains, guides, etc if you need a set...would sell them cheap!

Most reputable shops will charge $2200 - $2500 for the job you describe include the upgraded oil pump and warrantee. A ford reman engine is around 3500 to 4200 (not including labor) Your money and you need to go where your comfortable but you may want to research some local shops for reference.

A rebuilt motor on Rock auto is $1865 plus 450 core, and 200 to ship. You get the 450 back when you ship it back and has a 3 year/36000 mile warranty.

Just an update to close the thread. I paid $3600 to Elk Grove Ford to do the rails, guides, chains, phasers, both solenoids, and all the other related crap. The motor had 155k miles on it, and I have to say that it feels like a brand new engine. It is very responsive to throttle input, and my wife is very happy with the performance. She had been complaining about how sluggish it was.

I wanted to put a Melling oil pump in, but the tech said it would have been another $700 in labor, and no real payoff to spend that extra money. So I took his advice and did not push to put the pump in. Hopefully that does not turn out to be a mistake.

Happy journeys.
