When I did mine I ordered from RockAuto and it was a TransMaxx filter as I recall. One of the more pricey aftermarket options. No problems and the trans has shifted better since I replaced fluid/ filter. Use Mercon SP only on this transmission.

I ordered the motorcraft ft177 trans filter. With internal parts like this I tend to stick with motorcraft if I can help it. The odd thing is rock Auto doesn't even list the motorcraft ft177 for my vehicle. I had to Google the part number + rockauto and it popped up as in stock. Very strange.

just take to the jiffy-lube, dude, I'm sure they'll have a new hire former starbucks pajama boy waiting to overfill your tranny with their one fluid fits all vehichles.
I did this one time in my life for oil and it was only because I lived in an apartment and didn't have a jack. I brought the oil to them and they dumped the entire 5 quarts jug into a 2000 Civic si which called for 3.8 quarts. I told the guy he overfilled it and he told me that no, the bottles say 5 quarts but are really only 4 quarts. I made them drain and refill it. I've never had anyone change any oil in my vehicles since. That was in 2007. Took them to my parents and changed it there until I bought my own home. I would love to know how many vehicles these fast lubes have screwed up.

Scary thing is that same kid might be your city councilman some day. I think George Bush jr, worked at a gas station when he was young! Overfilled some Texans Cadillac.

I just changed the trans filter in my 08 Expy. I used the FT177 filter. I also have an aftermarket deep trans pan that holds more fluid than stock.

I collected all the trans fluid into a 12 quart oil pan. I poured all of it into bottles and collected almost 8.9 quarts of Mercon SP so I installed 9 quarts of Mercon SP. I probably didn't get all of it out since the torque converter does not have a drain plug nor could I drain the trans cooler but I am sure between those it probably is only 1 or two quarts so I think I will be fine.

Dealer wanted $300 for a trans flush only. No filter change.

Thanks for the reply! I think I have the stock pan but not sure. Judging by the ford stickers I do. I bought 8 quarts of mercon sp so hopefully that's enough. I'm also having the 2-1 downshift bump issue. I read on jaguar/bmw forums that this is caused by the mechatronics bridge/adaptor piece and the 4 rubber sleeves. I bought a bridge adaptor and the sleeves that apparently fit this trans but none of them say they fit the 2008 navigator. Hopefully I'm correct. I also bought a new mechatronics sleeves plug that you should replace when dropping the valve body. Hopefully this makes the trans 2-1 bump stop. It shifts very smoothly at all other times. Compared to the 6f35 trans in my 2014 fusion, the 6r75/6hp26 is so much smoother.

Can't speak for total fluid quantity on 6r75/80 transmission, but on my 4 r100, I drained pan and torque converter, mine does have the small drain bolt. I replaced 12 quarts when all was said and done. I started with 8, and went a quart at a time till between hash marks running warm in park. Most torque convertors hold 3 1/2 to 5 quarts depending on application. Safest bet if you don't mind the expense and work is drop the pan again in 10k to remove excess remaining old fluid. You can also remove line from cooler to do same. Just don't flush if trans has over 100k or so. Kinda of hard on internals The Lv and SP fluid intervals are as high as 150k, though none here recommend that high. Always amazes how Ford starts out with 2 drain plugs, then reverts to none and a miserable dipstick check. Burned hand next to exaust.

The fluid must be over 150F before the thermostatic valve opens to the trans cooler. If the fluid is below this temp it bypasses the trans cooler and will affect the how much fluid is needed to refill the system. This means the exhaust will be very hot when you check it with that little dipstick. You will need to estimate how much fluid was removed, replace and drive the vehicle so you can warm the fluid up. Also, wear thick gloves.

You can buy a dipstick from Jegs but's its expensive. $191. I have one on my Mustang and it works well. https://www.jegs.com/i/Performance-Automatic/732/PA68404/10002/-1

I'm at 127k and do not know if the trans has ever been serviced so I'll just be dropping the pan and refilling it without flushing anything or draining the torque converter. I figure the fresh additives in the fluid will at least help the trans even though I'm not replacing all of the fluid.
