I have a question about cam phasers, I see that a lot of people are putting lockouts in them and some say you need to custom tune/ program the ecu for that and my question is what brand has a better program? I've seen forbidden diesel (cheapest), WMS Racing (next cheapest) and Livernois Motorsports (most expensive), so how do I know which one to get?

I wouldn’t recommend doing the lockouts as you lose the Variable Cam Timing and some power. At 200k the phasers may just be worn a bit and knocking on the locking pin. Ford considers some noises or ticking as normal wear on higher mileage engines. Once you get misfires or codes and or loud knocking the phasers and timing set should be replaced.

Do you know the maintenance history? As far as bad fuel economy It may be time to change spark plugs, boots, and air filter. A 2008 may have an external fuel filter as well to consider.

If you get loud knocking it may be time to change the phasers. It’s recommended to do the whole timing set (oil pump, phasers, chains, guides, tensioners).

Well I did all new motocraft plugs and coils at about 160k. I may be over due on the air filter and fuel filter since I don't remember when I did them. That's a good starting point anyway

Are you saying that the bad fuel economy is not likely the phasers? I was under the impression that they can cause that too
