Got a favorite PCV For Dummies source? Maybe I could have tried harder... ;)

You know what amazes me is all the years I rode motorcycles back in the late 60's early 70's, when cars/trucks used draft tubes before pcv valves, that I never slipped and fell. Back then the majority of cars running around were from the 50's, and 60,s. Pcv valves didn't start till around 1961, later for a lot of manufacturers. The draft tubes released a bit of oil straight down on the roadway. Even staying out of the middle of the road through a turn, basically cars, and trucks were literally painting the roadways with oil.

Having a PCV system is a good thing for performance as well as for the environmental folks. In performance applications the catch can is also a great thing. Real performance cars take it further and install a vacuum pump to evacuate crankcase. The reason it's on one side versus another has to do with the rotation of the crank.
Unfortunately Flickr has dropped the hammer and all 17,000 of my pictures are now inaccessible. That's where I had a lot of good reference material. I have back-ups, just not handy. I'll take a look when I'm home and see if I can post something.

Yeah and one side is the clean side and the other the dirty side. The clean side is where the clean filtered air enters in the engine and the dirty side is where it’s vacuumed out. You gotta let air in to be able to vacuum it out.

I'm guessing here that if a motor rotates clockwise vs counterclockwise, the Pcv valve would be on the drivers side valve cover. Makes sense pressure builds in the direction of the rotation.

There are threads out there w guys draining half quart of oil after 5000 miles. I think it will vary depending on conditions, driving style, and vehicle.

I have searched high & low for ecoboost issues. I can't find any failures or complaints relating to carbon build up. I've found Explorer carbon monoxide issues and Fiesta ecoboost motor issues due to a sensor allowing for overheating. Article below. With all of the millions of ecoboosts on the roads in WOT police vehicles, in service vans, in cars from Fiestas to Expeditions with owners that surely don't take good care of them. I looking at company work vans with drivers that will abuse them and skip service intervals. There isn't a peep of premature engine failures all over the place because of carbon build up.

I do think the motor is designed to burn the gunk you are pouring out of your catch cans. The numbers of complaints don't add up to needing one. It's like the 3,000 mile oil change myth. You could put in a catch can and change oil every 3000 or even 1000 miles and say see how long my vehicle lasted yet there are hundreds of thousands of similar vehicles that have no issues and didn't go to this extreme.

So please show me all of those carbon build up motor failures and piss poor running motor complaints and I'll run right out and buy one.

Edit: I did see the early years of ecoboost F150 stuttering issues where the solution was to drill a small hole in it. That was a poorly designed inter cooler issue not an oil vapor issue causing carbon build up. It has been fixed since.

I look at it like this. I like to put stickers on the driver side rear window of my Expy. Makes me feel good. This seems to annoy some people, who think its absurd. Fine, I could care less. Works for me, not their Truck so who cares what they think.

If somebody likes a certain type of oil, a Catch Can, lift kits, K&N air filter, 3K oil changes or other maintenance interval, certain tires or wheels, specific spark plugs, LED lights, 5 Star tune, wind deflectors, hood latch pins, anti corrosion methods, specific type of gas, removing the roof rack, rear wiper customization, tailpipe delete, beefy kickass bumpers, radiator upgrades … you name it … and they want to do it and feel good about it --- God Bless Them !!!!! Go for it, enjoy life.

I’m thinking a catch can is not for you..... and that is perfectly okay! Nobody is on here trying to sell you one or telling you that you will have catastrophic failure if you don’t have one. To me (and no one else) it’s a preventive maintenance thing in my mind. It’s not to avoid catastrophic failure if I don’t have one. If nothing else my plugs should last a little longer,or at least not oil foul or not have as many oil deposits on them in a normal lifespan or recommended change interval ......right? It’s all good!

Why is it we get so many posts on oil questions, but very little on diagnostic of electrical, or engines? It's only oil, not the crystal ball of life. That, I'd love to see 70 posts. And one by a guy/girl that actually saw and talked to you know who? This outa get the party going! Anyone died and saw the bright light?
