Lower temp thermostat

Checking to see if anyone has installed one of these or has thoughts about lowering temp of the engine via thermostat. This one puts it down to 160 degrees vs stock which I believe is 195 degrees(?).

Temps don't get crazy in Wisconsin but will be towing 24' TT around this coming summer. Looking to keep overall Temps down.

Has anyone else used a different performance thermostat?

Once your engine reaches its operating temperature and the thermostat opens, it remains open unless the engine temperature drops below the threshold.

If the engine operates at 205 degrees F (an example), the 160 or 195 degree thermostat remains open, once it opens and the engine continues to run and the vehicle driven.

A lower-temperature thermostat does not reduce the operating temperature of the engine, especially when towing.

If you install a lower-temperature thermostat, it will causes a slower engine warm-up when cold - which can reduce the HVAC heat output, reduce your fuel mileage is cold weather, and increase engine emissions.

I had a thermostat stick partway open and the temp never got above 170. Threw a check engine light for the coolant not getting to proper temp. I forget the code.

Me personally, I’d leave the proper thermostat installed. Towing a TT in Wisconsin..... yeah those long steep climbs that WI is known for are a killer!

What he said. ^ These engines don't run hot to begin with, so under regular usage I doubt your vehicle will ever reach operating temp.

And user Blksmk did install one. Shortly after he messaged me and said:

been data logging on hp tuners and this engine pulling 5500 lbs 500 miles and coolant temp was 122 to 165 f

... so in 500 miles his engine never reached operating temp.

If you legitimately need a new one, I recommend the Stant Superstat. When I replaced my OE tstat a few years ago, the Motorcraft replacement was about 1/2 the weight of it and seemed poorly made. The Stant Superstant was beefy and has performed flawlessly for the last 5 years.

What these guys said. A thermostat lower than 180 will trigger a "thermostat stuck open" DTC code after about 100 miles of driving. Been there, done that. I run a Motorad 180 High Flow now, no issues. The Motorad High Flow has a heavy duty bridge. Since I've had a Motorcraft bridge break I thought I'd give this heavy duty one a try.
I'm down in south Florida and it stays pretty warm down here anyway.
