I’m going to be switching to premium fuel for towing a travel trailer with my 2017, 3.5 turbo engine. A friend (not a Ford driver) said he thought it might take the onboard computer a week or two to “adjust” to the increased octane. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The recommended fuel is 91. Generally, if the computer was going to make any adjustments at all (e.g. ignition timing), it would be for lower octane. I don't imagine it would take long at all for it to make any adjustments regardless. I don't think I've seen it take more than 100 miles to re-learn anything on my '11.

I found this on a Ford F150 site, it will answer your question in a more accuate way.

The knock sensor just tells the computer when/if it's pinging/detonating. If it is, the computer adjusts the timing to compensate and stop the pinging/detonating. An advancement in timing generally increases your power output but increases the risk of pinging/detonation. Retarding the timing lowers the power output, and decreases the chance of pinging/detonation.

The higher the octane, the less chance of pinging/detonation.

What happens is, the computer reads the knock sensor, and if the engine is pinging/detonating, the computer will know, and back off the timing to make it stop pinging. What the higher octane does, is allow the engine to run a more advanced timing setting before pinging/detonation. The octane gives more breathing room. Therefore, the computer can run a little more of an advance on the timing before it pings/detonates....which is where you get the extra power from.

If you're driving around, it will usually adjust in under 60 minutes. You can see it with an OBD reader. I have the octane reading in the torque app.

The owners manual for my '15 Ecoboost specifies 87-octane fuel. Its in the chart on the first page of 'Specifications', page 355 in mine.

And the only time I've ever had a knocking issue was when I put some 85 octane in it, in Colorado. It took the ECM about 10 minutes to adjust to it.
