Hey all, quick request.
Back in December I started a teardown of my '03 Expedition EB to replace some blown head gaskets. Unfortunately, after getting the engine buttoned back up personal life threw a couple of months of delay via work travel at me. While I labeled most components, I didn't...
I'll add a head pressure check to the list when I drop off the valve seals just to be sure. Thanks for the input.
I didn't notice any signs of coolant in the oil (milky, foamy, etc). Given the explosive pumping of the coolant out of the shunt tank, it had to have been getting gas pumped in...
While waiting for the parts to come in and heads to get machined, I was cleaning up the deck and pistons. When I got to cylinder 4, this is what I found prior to cleaning:
Note that this is basically the only piston that wasn't just coated in a thick layer of carbon. Almost like it was...
Well, finally "won" the fight with the dipstick, by cutting off the flange. I'll JB weld it back together when the time comes, I don't imagine it'll be coming out on it's own.
Anyway, finally pics of the drivers side cylinders 5-8 and the valves for that side
Note that cylinders 7...
New water pump is a definite, there are signs of cavitation on the plate.
New oil pump...here's why I was thinking of replacing it.
A) Timing chains are off anyway, it's just 6 bolts away.
B) I don't know if the oil pressure went low, it overheated the oil when the wife was driving. Not low...

So current mileage is 146K. I'd like it to go to 200K, more would be a bonus. I'm willing for this to be an in-town car only now. To...
In that case, what's the best option?
I was already planning on having a local machine shop flatten and go through the heads/valves/etc.
Full rebuild DIY with parts from RockAuto?
Can I do it? Probably. Do I want to / have the time? Not really.
Short block? Any suggestions on where...
Hey all. I'm in the process of tearing down my '03 5.4L.
This started with the truck first overheating the oil (it was about 2Q low it turns out), then a few days later spewing coolant out the fill/expansion/shunt tank.
CO2 test confirmed exhaust gas in the coolant.
146K miles.
I had...
