I think you are right because the ride height seems to be fairly level now with it off and when it's on it is jacked up like a 60's car with shackles on the rear leafs.
So that explains the bounce too because pumped up air shocks have the same effect.

OK....I read the owner’s manual and it wasn’t much help...it’s like ¾” thick....but there was some clues about the suspension.
So I decided to do some experimentation.
I turned off the air suspension and trailer sway control using the setup buttons on the console.
