I had it to two different local mechanics (one near the place that sold the truck, the other near where I was living at the time.) The most recent one did a few minor things like new belt, solenoids, etc, but admitted he was in over his head when it started stalling out. He recommended taking it...
I bought it because we needed transportation with a lot of room inside for camping gear. Sure it looks good, but in three months the repair shops have driven it more than I have. Salvage yard said it was in good shape, a mechanic said it was in good shape, both lied, now I am $6000 poorer with...
Ford place came back with a quote of $9800 to replace the engine, plus there was some other work that should be done while they are in there. Truck is just not worth it, so I've wasted 3 months and $6000 on it. I also can't afford to replace it, so I guess I am screwed all around.

He didn’t say he couldn’t diagnose the problem he just didn’t want me to put a lot of money into something that may be better served by replacing the engine.

Spoke to Dale at the dealer today. Solenoids did not fix it. He says he could spend days and lots of my money trying to find the problem or drop a new engine in it. Looking at 5 to 7k for that kind of job.
Sigh.

It's an '06, but yeah about $3k for it, and we're another $2k into it two months later. Really starting to feel like I inherited someone else's problem.

I took it to a Ford dealer this morning. The tech said he has to replace two more solenoids. $650. Ouch. Fingers crossed - I have to get lucky at some point. Dropping a new engine in the thing is at least $5000, and I just don't have that.

He replaced the solenoids and it didn't change anything. He also promised I would have it this weekend, but forgot to leave the keys in it so I could pick it up. I'm getting it back Monday and taking it to someone who can actually fix it. At this point it has spent more time at the shop than my...
This is exactly what it's doing. I get some laboring around 40mph, and stalling when stopping. He's trying the cheap repairs first before jumping right into the timing chain. It's only at 188k so with luck I can shove off the timing chain work until later. Fingers crossed.

Also in the plan. As I said at the start of this thread - I am no mechanic, but I do like to know as much as possible about what I am riding (I have service manuals for my ST-1300) but given the timing and how we kinda need the truck so we can move to a new house next week, I wanted someone who...
That's part of the problem. The truck was in a town where I used to live, so we had my old mechanic look it over and replace the rear diff. I trusted that he would give it a thorough once-over. Unfortunately he kept having to delay it and push it back, until finally he just did the rear diff and...
