I had the same noise. The check engine light was flashing so I knew it was a misfire. Changed the coil but it was too late. The unturned fuel caused my cat to shit the bed. Replaced the cat and all is good. Don’t go to the big name muffler shops. They want $2500. Went to a mom and pop shop $400.
I had a similar sound and it was the cat. Cat fried due to a misfire. Franchise muffler shop wanted $1300. WTF! Mom and pop shop $450. Get it on a lift before it’s too late.
Changed my fuel injectors on my 5.4 2 valve and used mode 6 on my scanner and found cylinder 6 high misfire but no code. Wasnt there before the injector change. When i started it up #5 electrical connector tab broke off and became loose. I rigged it with wire ties and ran better. Still mode 6...
