I just went through this on a 5.4. Same symptoms anyway... Did a smoke test and found a minor vacuum leak at the intake manifold. Replaced the manifold and gaskets and all is good now.
Good idea and that'll certainly work but pics on the phone were easier for me as I tossed all of the bolts in a bucket of solvent to clean the crud off of them while I was working on other things.
All back together and so far I've driven it about 100 miles with various types of driving with no CEL! I think my problem is resolved! So far I haven't noticed any rough idle on cold starts, I'm pretty confident that was intake leak related.

Update!
Tore everything down last weekend. Got the intake and valve covers off, was pretty painless for the most part, worst part was getting to the last couple rearmost valve cover bolts on the passenger side. I also had a problem with the thermostat housing bolts being seized up. Broke the...

Thanks for the reply but just to clarify- mine is leaking air in at an intake port, not leaking coolant as far as I can tell.
Is it advisable to replace the manifold anyway if it’s being removed?
So I have this truck which has been giving me lean codes on both cylinder banks for months and I finally want to fix it. I looked all over for the obvious leaky vac hose or boot but found nothing. After doing a smoke test on the intake plenum it appeared to be puffing a little smoke from beneath...
