    1998 5.4 engine problem — STUMPED

Are you able to pull up fuel trim information? That would be ideal in order to get a better idea of what's going on. We will need long term and short term from both banks with 2 screenshots; one in idle and the other at about 2000-3000 RPMs.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I had a look around and found this. Comes with the heads...

    Farewell To My Expedition

I took the 2005 5.4 3v out for a test run today and it feels great. No ticking on startup, no leaks and it handles well. Only 1 owner who's taken great care of it. Dipstick oil is clean and everything is functional. I thought to myself if the cams ever were to go out, it should have already...

    Farewell To My Expedition

Thanks everyone. I'm now looking at a 2005 Eb with 168k miles on it. I searched the forums and saw that someone recommended that you only get one if there's been a new set of phasers and a new timing kit. Wonder if I can get that kind of info from the dealership...

    Farewell To My Expedition

My 2001 4.6 began knocking a while back, and I just diagnosed it as play in the piston on cylinder 8. I brought the piston to TDC, let off a bit and pushed down into the spark plug hole with an extension and I felt the infamous "knock" play and verified it about 4 more times. I'm sure that this...

    Compression test 01 Navigator

Damnit is right! I'm sorry to hear that it happened to you as well. When it happens it definitely lets know you when you hear that big POP. Yes, you definitely need the thinner reluctor wheel unfortunately. I really wish that they had left it alone and just kept the original crank sprocket...

    Crankshaft Pulley Gap

After torqueing the bolt in the pulley sat further in it's original position. Been a while since I've done this, I forget that tightening the bolt down does the rest of the work for you.

    2001 Expedition 5.4 Head Gaskets

My mistake. I thought that plugs would blow out even if you torqued them down correctly. That's great to know!

    2001 Expedition 5.4 Head Gaskets

Whatever you decide to do, have spark plug thread inserts put into your heads while they are already out! The threads on our heads are very few and plugs have blown out as a result.

    4.6 2V oil pump wear

Sounds like you're going through quite a battle with that. Taking the cover off sucks because you have to take all of those bolts out, the pulleys and then clean all of the gasket globs from the head joints. I'm going through one myself while putting this engine together. I found out yesterday...

    Crankshaft Pulley Gap

I haven't done that yet. And thanks for the input, I just wasn't sure if I needed to be at a specific distance from the timing cover. The other pulleys are a little closer to the timing cover, about 1/8 of an inch. The crank is a bit further back about a quarter inch but it still looks like it...

    Crankshaft Pulley Gap

Hello all, I had a basic question about reinstalling a crankshaft pulley on my 2001 Ford expedition XLT 4.6. I went to install a crankshaft pulley after this timing job and at a certain point I could not go any further as the torque for the install tool got tougher and tougher. I've attached a...

    4.6 2V oil pump wear

@lonestarjeff I just did the exact procedure this week on my 2001 4.6 XLT! Doing a timing chain job and went ahead and replaced the oil pump. I had a hard time separating the inlet tube from the pump as well. I had to tilt the pump all the way to the right as far as I could, then used a...

    Compression test 01 Navigator

Good stuff! Just don't do what I did and keep the old thicker crank reluctor wheel on if you received a new thinner one with a new crank sprocket. Not using the newer reluctor sprocket in combination with the new (thicker) crank sprocket caused the timing cover to crack on torquing down the...

    New catalytic converters w pipes

Could you feel the rattling beneath your feet under the floorboard? I installed new cats a couple of years ago and I think this is happening to my cats. It almost feels like a "grinding" noise coming from underneath when I'm in idle.
