With the purchase of my 2009 XLT, came my first experience with the automated oil change indicator. Up until now, I've been accustomed to religiously changing my oil every 3,000 miles. My question is, can I rely solely on this indicator to tell me when the oil needs to be changed or do I still need to follow the 3,000 mile rule? Also, is this indicator tied to a particular mileage or is there a sensor that can tell when the oil needs changing?

suggest you read your owners manual It appears that your message center is set for an interval of 7500 miles but upon further reading it can be set to a lower value to allow you to set your own preference for oil changes.

Agreed, those are usually just mileage counters that trip the light when it hits the value. As Bedrck46 said, there should be a way to adjust when the light comes on. There isn't a sensor that can read the effectiveness of the oil. Usually you need a lab just to do that.

Don't rely on the light...continue to go old school...nothing beats pen and paper with date and mileage on it. At least that's what I continue to do.
Yours came with semi-syn from the factory and thus intervals were already pushed out beyond 3000mi. I'm never gonna be one to tell you you have to change it at ....interval. For me, I made the switch to full synthetic oil and extended performance filters(Mobil) and bumped my intervals to 6000mi. Probably still overkill but it make me happy!
