Anyone know if anyone has ever tried to install inspection ports to see the timing chains and guides right below the cam sproket in our engines. It looks like you might be able to drill and tap between the chains so you could have a look inside with a snake camera. Than plug the hole up, thinking a large bolt or something might work. Any thoughts???

Yes i am, dreading having to pull it apart now being a canadian winter and all. Over the last week, week and a half sounds like something binding and grinding in the front cover, and fuel milage has tanked to almost half what it was 2 months ago. I already have the timing chain kit to replace it, just thinking that maybe an inspection cover might be a thing to look into, just incase. I know if there was an easy way check them, you can catch something before it happens, or it might be nothing. Would suck to pull it all apart have have nothing wrong in there.

Interesting idea.

I would just worry about flushing out all the aluminum shavings when drilling. Could easily be done when the timing cover is off for future inspections and you could better identify where to put it.

There is a crank sensor and cam sensor that can be removed for possible investigation via a snake camera. Whether there is enough room to negotiate the camera I have no idea.

Also if you drop the oil pan or remove valve cover(s) it gives you access behind the timing cover.

I think the timing cover might be too close to the chains and guides to get a camera in and snaked around. I think you'd be better off dropping the pan or pulling the valve covers like Tom said.

Well i tried getting a 9mm flex cam down in the cover with the valve covers off. There is enough room to see the guides and tenshioner in there. If with the chain cover off you could drill a 3/4 inch hole right below the cam sprocket and have enough room that way. Just have to come up with a way to cover it. So a money prospect for someone maybe. Making front covers with inspection ports. For the person who wants to check them every few months. Or is that just me...
