Fords recommending mercon v for all the first edition expeditions. I have a 2000 4x4 that my owners book called for regular mercon. But my friend that works parts said mercon v for 4r100 trans, as well as 4r70. I had the dealer flush the old fluid, and replace with my Ford type v. It's been 15k since they changed it, with no issues. If you do it your self, drain torque convertor too.

I don't think their is a drain plug on 03. My :2000 has one, but I believe it was 2001 or 02 that was the last year for the drain. Ford pretty much recommends mercon v for 4 r70 and 4 r100 early style transmissions. Theirs a procedure online to purge all your old fluid, or you can have it flushed. As long as services were done close to schedule you should be ok. If not you might want to drain fluid, and change filter, then re drain just fluid again in 50-100 miles. Anyway theirs your 3 options.

Thank you. My fluid is reddish and smells a little burnt so I think I will change the fluid and filter then change the fluid after that but I will check out that video of purging the fluid

Don't mess around with additives and cleaners. If you've read our forum, they can do more damage than good. Just swap out fluids and filter and clean pan. With burnt fluid you could be opening a Pandora's box. But if you leave burnt fluid it will get worse with time.

It shifts good now. I just picked her up a few months ago and now I'm getting around to the trans fluid and by the look and smell I think it is time. I will skip on the seafoam and just do a fluid and filter change and see how it feels from there

The problem with flushing or additives is they can dislodge buildup in your trans, causing shifting problems, and proper pump function. These are one of the few automatics that have a drain plug, but so many still put off doing the service. At $3000 and up for a trans, you'd think more people would do a fluid change every 30-40k, but they think it will last. Same person has no problem blowing $100 on drinks, or $200 on dinner.
