HELP! This is the most infuriating issue EVER! Long story but I will try to provide as much info as possible.

I have a horrible vibration and whomping sound from the front left tire area. The best way to describe this noise is like a washing machine spinning out. It starts out loud and clunky and then as speeds increase the sound gets more harmonic. The sound is MUCH worse when turning the wheel to the right and cannot be heard when turning the wheel to the left. The ABS warning light on the dash is illuminated.

Things we have replaced:

Left wheel hub: there was significant movement (top to bottom) in my tire so the hub was bad (tire shaking sensation when driving is GONE but the whomping sound remains)

Left front CV axle: (thinking maybe the CV was bad) NOPE, no change

Left front break caliper: (thinking maybe the caliper was sticking or fully extended) NOPE, no change

Thats the 'guts" of the problem. Everything on the vehicle is stock. The tires are the recommended size and were replaced last fall.

The next thing we are going to try in the wheel seal but I don't know what this could be. Please help us. We are losing our minds trying to figure this out!

Sometimes, it's worth it to take it to a shop you trust and let them figure it out. Then decide if it's worth it to let them fix it....or pay the diagnostic fee and do it yourself. Sounds like you've tossed parts at a problem not knowing exactly what it is and have wasted some cash.

Angie, remember that diagnosis of a problem with your vehicle is 95 percent of the game. The other 5 is repairing the problem. That's why most dealerships have a leg up on independent shops, because they work only on Fords. That and technical bulletins for the mechanic to view. These help with problems that the factory have discovered, and have a fix for. Saves the Tech a lot of diagnostic time. Also most dealerships have 2 or 3 mechanics that specialize on expeditions/ Navigators. Anyway I tend to agree with Jedi, have a experienced shop diagnose your problem. Then you can decide if you or they finish. We here always condone repairing yourself, but that's up to your budget/ skill level.

Check your lower ball joint. Do it a couple of inches in the air and put a pry bar under the wheel. Think of a shopping cart, with a crazy front wheel.

This may sound very weird but check your passenger side rear wheel bearing.

My 04 was making that noise and had the same issues and after wheel bearing in the passenger side rear it went away .no issues for 3 years now.

The bearing was bad enough that the abs sensor couldnt read. I had taken it to my local tire shop and i always shake it down when its in the air. Thats how i found it .
Good luck. And keep us posted .
