Ever wish you had Wireless charging for your Phone built in? (15-17)
I was inspired by a friend who stopped over a few weeks ago with an 18 Silverado 1500. Built into the lid of his center console was a small spot to put your phone that charged it wirelessly.
I wanted it, so here is how to do one. While this is in a 2017, it can be used just about anywhere.
I started by looking for OEM components that I could retrofit and quickly found that route to be very expensive.
So, I went on Amazon and ordered a Yootech Wireless charger that would do fast charging for my S8 Samsung phone. ($15) It was slim in profile and its dimensions allowed it to fit in the pocked in front of my shifter.
Next, I took it apart to see what I was dealing with because it was too thick, the phone would slide around in the pocket and I wanted it to blend in.
I removed the rubber insert of the pocket and cut out the profile with a razor blade. (note: I cut the USB plug facing the shifter side of the car because there is ton of room around the shifter to run the cables.
checking that it still works…
I removed the center console trim (start by pulling the trim ring off the shifter, the take out the 7mm bolt then pop the entire assembly out and unplug the cup-holder lighting). Then I took a drill bit and reamed out the hole for the cable to pass thru into the shifter area
It Fits!...
Then I wrapped the entire assembly in tape so it was less easy to see and to protect any components
I drilled a hole into the center console to pass the USB cable through.
I used a rubber shelf liner to cover the top, it grips the phone so it cant slide, thin enough that power transfers through it and the holes help keep the temps down, plus I just had it laying around. I used some industrial hot glue in the corners to hold the runner mat in place.
I cut a piece to fit and put it all back together.
While the phone does not slide around at all, I can place the phone anywhere in this pocket (screen up) and it will charge. The phone sits flush and it doesn’t look out of place. Plus, the phone cover is 90% of it anyway. I plugged the USB cable into the USB plug in the center console and it powers on and off with the car. I still have to test if it fast charges plugged into the USB port. I may tie it into a 12v accessory wire with a standard USB charger if its not fast charging.
Total time about 45 min and cost $15. I'm sure the process could be refined or better products used but it works for me. I guess time will tell.
