I have a 97 Expedition I got at a great price but needs a transmission. I found out afterward there is no interchange for the transmission.

Is it an option to change the computer with a newer transmission or is it safest to stick with the 97? I have not been able to find out what made the 97 different than the other ones.

97 Expedition, 4.6L, 4R70W

There are currently 3 97 Expeditions at one junkyard and some 98 and up at others.

I am guessing that would be a big unknown unexplored territory! I am thinking I will just rebuild the transmission. By the time I tried to do what may be needed to use another year, it would be easier to do the for sure thing and just go with a rebuild. I am hoping to come across a good transmission at the salvage yard at some point so I can throw it in and rebuild the one that is on it now. Time and inventory will tell.

A lot of times manufacture's find out halfway through their first year, 1997 in your case, somethings too weak, or something isn't right, so they get their designers and engineer's on a newer stronger part. On my Lincoln Mark 7 it was the overdrive drum that was too small, and was finally upgraded to a larger one later on. You might pick the brains of your local tranny shop. Maybe you get to talk with someone that knows.

But 97 could have a certain sensor, or clutch pack, or something that doesn't make it plug and play. Maybe one of our Ford techs can elaborate. Tomorrow Monday ive got a few shops that I can call. Did you Google it?

When I checked around, it was just something was different in the 97 that was changed in the later years. In the rebuild kit there is a kit that fixes an issue with shifting that was common in the 97 for a better shift.

Well their you go. Theirs always teething problems on any new vehicle, no matter how many years they took designing it. I'll bet Rolls Royce, and Packards back in the day which were top of the heap, suffered from something that had to be changed. It's just the nature of the beast!

I have not been able to find if the same year transmission out of a truck would work in the expedition. Would open up my options.

Check pick and pull, they have a great exchange database, that will tell if it should. I was having trouble finding an Abs unit for my 89 Lincoln mark 7, they looked it up, and found that the Lincoln continental used the same part, which they had.

So far seems no luck. I searched a website's interchange database that is linked to a junk yard. Leave it to me to pick out something that has to be picky lol.
