So I was going to head out of town this passed weekend. Went to start it Friday and it started, made some loud sounds and ran rough so I cut it off. It won't cut back on. I'm hoping it isn't the timing belt/chain. Anyone have any ideas?

What year and engine size? Any time you start hearing noises followed by a rough idle is never good. How many miles on the Expedition? First thing is make sure the oil is topped up. Beyond that you'll more than likely have to pull valve covers, front timing cover. You have timing chains, not a belt. Are you going to do work yourself? Was any engine work done recently?

2003 4.6L. 162000 miles. Oil is good. I plan on doing the work myself with someone who knows about working on engines more than myself. Also, no engine with has been done recently.

Loud sounds and running rough sounds internal. Possibly a slipped/ worn timing chain? If that happened, and one of the cams moved a tooth, that would make it run rough. Either way, you and your friend/ mechanic probably has some tear down, and inspection to do.

Ok. That was a suspicion. I guess when this weather breaks we will start to diagnose. I appreciate it.

Another common problem is a stuck/galled bore on one of the rear cylinder valve actuator's. These are overhead cam motors, but use these. Either way as I said earlier its tear down time. Don't run it any more, furthur damage can incur.
