Very disappointed!

Have been waiting to hear from the dealer and determine what is going to be done. The transmission failure was catastophic! Unrepairable. Dealer put in a claim to Ford for a new transmission and it is supposed to be ready for us to pick it up Wednesday. We'll see. For all you horse people, I was concerned about the horses and would have posted if anything had awful had happened to them...they are fine...were rescued by a friend with a Tundra. Funny...no one asked about my wife...who wants to get rid of the Ex as soon as we get it back. Says will never trust it again. It was a very traumatic experience for her.

Glad everybody, including your Wife and the Horses are OK!

Again, What was the total loaded weight? Do you have the Heavy Tow Package?

The weight at the time of the failure was much less than the max tow rating.

Yes...it has the Heavy Tow package. We bought it specifically because we tow the trailer and we had a 99 Eddie Bauer that was about as perfect a vehicle you would ever want. Gave it to my son when we got the 2015 and it now has over 200,000 mile and is still going strong.

10-4, I honestly think you had a fluke.

The Trans in your Expedition is a tried and true design used in Millions of vehicles with a VERY low failure rate. It is used in vehicles with higher Tow ratings than our Expy’s. With the Heavy Tow Pack and the Trans fluid cooler it should easily meet your needs.

Just do a search for Expedition Transmission failures on Google. You will get VERY few hits.

I wonder if trans service was done recently, and Fluid was not filled properly?

I know none of this helps your wife’s confidence with the truck! That is a very important part of the equation.

There are not many SUV’s that Tow as well as the 15-17 Expedition in my opinion.

Could have been the pump failed, and that caused the meltdown. Automatic transmissions are a very complex piece in your vehicle. Can't blame the wife though. Doesn't take much for an Automatic to act up. At my work we have a fleet of 240 Ford Transit vans with 3.5 engines and 6 speed transmissions. To my knowledge we've not had one failure yet. And this is over 4 years.

My wife has done a search for transmission failures in this model, and has come up with VERY FEW hits. She does agree that it's surely an anomoly, but...

I purchased the maintenance package when we bought it and it has been adhered to 100%. If the service wasn't done correctly, it's on the dealer's shop.

Ever thought that he maybe has not had the issue resolved yet. Ford can take a while they took 15 days to find a solution with truck and then a couple more days to fix. I get yall wanna know a solution and stuff but yall are quick to jump. Not everything is fixable right then and there and some people don't live on this website or the computer.

Exactly where I was going. Somebody skipped a step, or only put the amount of fluid for a Truck without a Trans Cooler. The root cause is going to be hard to lock down. Either way, it will get fixed.

Wish you luck! I know us quoting numbers doesn’t help much.

But as a side, I had a 15, that in my opinion saved my wife’s life when a lady turned in front of her when she was going 45. She walked away with a few bruises. It was totaled. Went out and bought the exact same Truck in a 17. It even called 911 for her.

Towed over 7K with it 2 times, and zero issues. LOVE Tow/Haul on this trans, and how it handles grade shifting.

Problem is C dunn is we get posts all day long, and I guess we get a little ticked off when a poster asks for advice, then myself, and 4-5 of our regular techs take time to help, and they just disappear. It wasn't the case in this situation, but imagine our frustration. None of the techs including myself get a dime for the diagnostic advice. We just wish more would respond back, or let us know Suv is down for 2 weeks. It's just common courtesy, and makes more of us want to contribute.

Good to know, hopefully I won't get struck by lightening twice. lol. When I did the first trans service on my Expedition the pan was quite clean, very little clutch material and very little on the magnets.

As a side note, I just can't say enough good things about how well the Expedition tows our boat.. it's made towing long distances much less stressful. Now if only the side mirrors were a little larger.

I hear you about the mirrors. I had a set of Trail Ridge telescoping tow mirrors on my 2008 Expedition, and moved them over to my 2016 Expedition XLT when I bought it a few months ago. They were an exact fit, except the left/right control doesn’t work (probably a wire schematic issue), but all other functions work. I can manually adjust the left/right, small sacrifice for the MUCH better visibility these mirrors give when towing our 30’ travel trailer. Just thought I’d mention it as there are bigger options out there. Photos are below, and show the mirrors in the collapsed mode. They telescope out a few inches for towing.
