I have owned my 2015 Expedition XLT since February, 2015, and I use the backup camera display almost every day I drive it. Recently, the display went haywire with the screen showing a black, distorted (similar to static noise) image. I searched this forum to see if others had experienced the same thing, and if they had, to find an explanation or solution. I found a couple things to try, with one of those being checking the connection of the wires going to the rear view mirror.
The next time time I started my Expedition after checking those wires, the display returned to normal. But, it now included something I had never seen before. Two icons now appeared in the center, at the bottom edge of the display. One looked like a bar chart, and the other was a magnifying glass. The second one was easy to figure out; it was a switch for activating a zoomed-in close-up view. The first one didn't become obvious until I backed up close to an object. It activates a "boxed" zone in green, yellow, or red to show how close you are to making contact. Turned off, you simply get the hash-lined grid in green, yellow, and red.
I like these features but I wonder why I suddenly see them, after three plus years of owning my vehicle. I have no idea if the black, distorted image I saw on the display for a couple days, is associated with these new features. It's almost as if Ford did a firmware update on the display via Synch, without notifying me or giving me an on-screen option to accept or decline the update.
