They do have a cooler, it is part if the radiator. The aux cooler goes on front, receives fluid from radiator out put and the returns it to trans.

Hello all, we purchased a certified preowned 2015 expedition el in July of this year. We absolutely love it! One thing that I was reserved about while looking at it was it's lack of HD towing kit. We informed our salesman of our intent to purchase a larger travel trailer. Guessing we would end up around 7500 lbs, 900 lbs over current tow rating. Our salesman asurred me that it could be added later. "As simple as a new radiator and auxilary trans cooler. We have the 3.73 rear end and they installed our brake controller as we were on a trip at time of purchase. All we are missing is the radiator and cooler. We just purchased a 30 foot trailer that weighs 6100 dry and 7500 fully loaded. We called our local ford dealers for estimates on install of hd components. They all informed me it was not possible and to call the dealer i purchased from (400 miles away). They have been "looking into it" for a week now. We took the trailer (lightly loaded) on a 300 mile round trip journey. Guestimating 6600lbs. The expedition did amazing! It has all the power we needed and my trans temp averaged 210 never exceeding 225. My concern is whe n we decide to travel on the other side of the mountains. I'm very mechanically inclined and interested in any info any of you might have, primarily parts list of components, hoses, brackets etc.
Thanks in advance!
Jon.

Yeah you def need the trans cooler. I have the HD tow package and our boat on the trailer is 6900 lbs. We towed it with probably an additional 200 lbs of luggage in it and 6 people in the Expedition from Houston to Brandon, MO and never saw over 207.

Don't forget weight for weight a boat will always tow cooler/better cause of the aero. They have a V shape in the front vs a camper having a flat area...

A good aftermarket cooler would work wonderful. Don't go to small though

I think one like this will be good:

Hayden Automotive 678 Rapid-Cool Plate and Fin Transmission Cooler https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C3DDKO/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_ticNBbR4CPM9Z

I too plan on doing this.
The radiator should be a straight swap the lines for the cooler I have not gotten a chance to look into yet.
Hopefully it is not too complicated.
When I first purchased I thought the standard tow package had a smaller cooler and one would just swap in a bigger one. But once I started looking there is no cooler at all for the standard package.

Interesting information here. It appears there are two radiator part #s on 15’ trucks. Some years had only 1 radiator and the trans cooler was optional.

Correct.

The tow prep package includes hitch and 4 pin wiring. Came with a smaller radiator that also cooled the trans.

The HD tow package includes hitch and 7 pin wiring. Heavy duty radiator and a separate transmission cooler.

The bracket for the trans cooler is there on the prep package.

I have not had a chance to see how the hoses are different to accommodate the transcooler. But I am guessing one just needs to put the hoses from the trans to the transcooler instead of the radiator and buy to hoses to go from the radiator to the transcooler.

I know on some earlier 3rd gen trucks there was one Motorcraft radiator part # that fit both the “super cooling” and “standard cooling” packages. Both had a separate aux trans cooler though of differing capacities. Still this retrofit on a 15’ is very possible. I’d bet the hoses line up and it fits. Ford keeps the parts dimensions and exterior attributes pretty similar because it saves them $$$.

Definitely get the transmission cooler, if you're seeing 225 on flat ground, you're in trouble. You can order the factory 7 row transmission cooler or the 10 row Dorman replacement unit. If check the scales, I have an ultralight aluminum frame fiberglass sided 26ft trailer that grosses 6200 pounds. Stick and tin trailers like yours are considerably heavier and that looks to be in the 30ft range. There should be a yellow sticker on the front of it that lists unloaded and gross weights, which do not include batteries or water in tanks (and sometimes not propane either). Either way, your transmission will not last long towing that rig without a transmission cooler.

I'm also interested in this. Mine is an Enterprise rental level of basic (zero options). I got the same song and dance from every Ford dealer within 30 miles; liability laws prevent them from being definitive I guess.

Apparently Ford dealers are unable to comprehend how to do work past normal service work. I asked about upgrading my radiator and adding trans cooler and they got confused to as all the parts they had to order off the parts diagram. Must not be an option for them to just add a "tow package". I was almost belittled for not buying one with a max tow package. I told them why spend 25k more for something they had on the lot when I got on an 18 instead of a 17 that needs 1k worth of parts! Anyway, etrailer and you tube have plenty of videos on how to do. I was fortunate and when I finally got under the hood and looked, i have the trans cooler with the max payload package. I had them check the radiator when they tried to install the factory brake controller and couldn't and found out it also has the larger radiator. With that said my normal tow on flat ground is around 208 and 217-23 up small mountains and heavy stop and go traffic, while my engine temp stays normal. My camper is pretty equivalnt to your with the 6400 dry and 7600 max. I pack a lot of crap in there and usually carry water so probably near max. Good Luck your on the right path.
