New to the forum. Just bought my 03 about a month ago. was looking into adding some pod lights and couldn't find a decent place to put a switch panel until I noticed it had an ashtray. Since I don't smoke I figure its in the best thing to remove and place the switches there. Does anyone know how to remove it or has anyone done something similar?

Anyways i believe theres screws holding down that black cubby in place under the little rubber mat, I'd start there otherwise you might have to pull apart the center section and we all know that ain't happening!

I'm trying to remember how I removed mine... I put some switches in there as well. I believe if you remove the little rubber mat in the console, you'll see a screw or two that need to come out. Once those are out the upper part of the console lifts (snaps) off (if I remember correctly)...

When I had my gears changed I opted to take advantage of having things apart and had some lockers installed. When the guy asked me where I'd like the switches I showed him the ash tray and he immediately liked that and worked hard to get them in there. It ended up working but not looking real nice so I bought a small, three switch plate, bought a new ash tray off of eBay, and redid it.
Here's the before...
And here's the after...

I believe the Eddie Bauers came with the flip out ashtray, but the XLT models just had a fixed cigarette lighter there right? I need to replace my flip out ashtray since the plastic hinge nearest the spring broke and the ashtray got all sideways and jammed up. It's getting harder to find these parts as the years go by. Every junkyard has the XLT console, few have the EB flip out ashtrays. The search continues....
