The trim piece on the XLT is black plastic, so when you break the tabs on your chrome one you can just buy a black one to replace it.

I see that you got it so I am a little late to the party but here is a good video that shows most of removing the dash, center console, and driver’s knee bolster.

Mine is silver.

Order a 2008 XLT one and it's black. $26.05: 7L1Z-7E391-AA

A silver one will cost you 82 cents more.
