I have a '97 Expedition with no roof rails. Does anyone know if it's possible to install some Ford OEM roof Rails or is this a waste of time? I really don't want to buy generic universal roof rails.

My end goal is to install a large roof rack for traveling/storage.

I would assume a junkyard will have everything you need.

The rails that attach to the roof are attached with torx screws (the star shape). The cross rails will slide off the back. You may need a flat screw drive to depress the clip that keeps them from sliding all the way off.

My biggest concern is hoping there is unused mounting areas on the interior of my roof to connect these rails on the outside.

Climb up there and look. I'll bet it's got the holes up there already.

It's way cheaper and easier for Ford to make all bodies have the mounting points- even if it doesn't get the rack.

There are no holes or plugs on my roof at all. I believe i have a dirt basic model.

My last resort would be for me to drop my headliner and take a look at whats underneath my roof.

I added extra holes to the roof of my Explorer. I just used a big fender washer, a self locking nut and RTV to seal it up. Nothing really special about it.

is it safe enough to take weight? I have a 98 Explorer as well, but luckily it has a OEM roof rack and rails.

First gen Expedition roof rails were limited to 200 pounds when mounting on the crossbars, when equipped.

Strapping stuff to the roof, not using the crossbars, was limited to 150 pounds. I know, I know, manufacturer ratings... We've all seen that Expedition at the lumber yard with enough cedar for a 8x12 deck with railing.

You asked if it would be a waste of time and my honest answer is yes. Would be best/easiest/possibly cheapest IMO to get a hitch mounted basket. Even the cheapest are rated for 400 pounds.

I'd lean towards this guy here:
