After several years, I'm once again an owner of an Expedition. Purchased a Silver 2017 a couple of weeks ago! Looking forward to being back on the forums.

When did you get rid of your last Expedition and what made you come back to one? They just look so much better, is that the reason why you came back? :)

There is fewer new Expeditions on the road, since the 1st Gens came out. Is that because they 'look' so much better? If they improved them, they would outsell the previous year model.

I took the previous post to mean all years look better than the competition, but if we look at year over year decline in sales it probably isn't about looks.

Two reasons - purchase price and gas prices. I think the sticker prices have climbed faster than the market would bear and gas prices haven't been great the last few years.

1997 they were introduced at $27,620 - $34,225 new (source - https://www.autotrader.com/Ford/Expedition/1997)

2007 they were $29,245-$39,995 (source - https://www.autotrader.com/Ford/Expedition/2007)

2017 they were $42,600-$67,250 (source - https://www.autotrader.com/Ford/Expedition/2017)

2018 they were $51,790-$76,175 (source - https://www.autotrader.com/Ford/Expedition/2018)

Add to that pressure over average fleet mpg and the whole market is becoming more niche. Not only Ford is affected by declines in this segment.

Peak year for Expedition 1997-2017 was 1999 at 233,125, 2017 was 51,883. (source: http://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-data/ford/ford-expedition/)

Peak year for Suburban was 2001 at 154,782. 2017 was 56,516 (source: http://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-data/chevrolet/chevrolet-suburban/)

For a third reason - Environment shaming. I get it from my coworkers fairly regularly.

I agree, but Ford has done little in the looks dept. The 2nd Gens look more dated the the 1st.The 3rd Gen were minor tweaks of the 2nd, but with a v6. The 4th Gens, were at the least, disappointing. Explorer front end-Tahoe from the side.

3rd Gen started with the V-8 (2007-2014) and went most of its time without the V6 (2015-2017). While I don't agree with it, I think they were trying to unify it with the rest of the brand in looks. The Front from the Explorer, and the tail lights from the F-150.

I sold my 2011 Expy to Carmax to start an employee lease option that I couldn't pass up. When it was time to stop leasing and purchase something, I had loved my 2011 so much that I decided that I wanted another Expedition. Found one in my price range and got it. I wasn't crazy about the idea of a V-6, but now I'm loving it.
