I just acquired an expedition with this problem. It works perfectly in 1st and 2nd but doesn’t shift to 3rd. If I unplug all the sensors it locks in Third and can be driven at highway speeds.

Anyone have any ideas what would cause this.

Run a codes check first. 2 things come to mind. 1, the passages for the 3-4 shift are gummed up in your valve body, and 2, you might have a bad shift solenoid. The second should show on the diagnostic with a quality scanner. The first you'll have to drop pan. If fluid is gritty, or dirty, and did cause the valve to stick, you might have a torque converter going bad. Check fluid color, and condition first. Get a clean white paper towel or blank computer paper. Wipe a sample on it, see what it looks like. Have you been regular with your services at 30k? Real important with the heavy loads. I believe you have the 4r80 trans, correct?

Sounds like a shift solenoid to me. Get it scanned.

I will have it scanned as soon as a light is present.

I have a little more information after finally getting to drive it again. If I leave it in drive it doesn't want to shift to 2nd from first. But if I put it in 2nd it will shift from 1st to second.

Also the speedometer is not reading. At 35-40 it registers about 15

It could even be a MLPS Manual lever position sensor (neutral safety switch on side of trans) or a VSS vehicle speed sensor- usually on trans some have two or an output shaft on too.

Both could mess up shifts.

Sorry for the delay in getting back on this.

I replaced the VSS and it didn't change anything.

So to recap the transmission drives in 1st gear if I put it in drive, it doesn't shift up any gears. If I put it in 2nd gear manually it shifts fine from first to second. Does not shift to 3rd or 4th.

Your now throwing parts at it. You don't need a check engine light to have a stored code. I'd sure hate to see you buy $500.00 in parts, and still be broken. Seen it here way too much.

Yes it does stay In second if put in second. I was meaning if I manually shift from drive or 1st to second.

I hooked the scanner to it but there are no stored codes or pending codes. I drove it around for a while and still no codes.
