Use FORScan to change the APIM so it will display required soft buttons on your Center/Nav display screen:

Sync 3 - Climate soft buttons on screen

APIM 7D0-01-01 xxxx xxxx x?xx

Change ? to:

1=Heated Seats, 2=Heated/Cooled Seats, 3=Heated Seats/AC, 4=Heated Steering Wheel, 5=Heated Seats/Steering Wheel, 6=Heated/Cooled Seats/Heated Steering Wheel, 7=Heated Seats/HSW, 8=AC/Rear Controls, 9=Heated Seats/AC/Rear Controls, A=Heated/Cooled Seats/AC/Rear, B=9, C=AC/Rear/HSW, D=Heated/AC/Rear/HSW, E=Everything

I changed my APIM to an 'E' so that I would have Heated/Cooled Seats Icon, the HSW icon, and maintain control over the Rear Temp Controls.

My screen originally only had the Heated/Cooled Seat Icons like this:

After I changed the APIM to 'E', my screen now had the HSW Icon like this:

With FORScan, change the IPC module so you can select the HSW option on Remote Start.

Heated Steering Wheel - On with Remote Start (Provides the option in the Left Instrument Cluster to enable the HSW to come on when you start Expy by Remote)

IPC 720-02-02 xxxx x?xx

Change ? To: Add 4 to the existing value at ?...example, mine had a 9, so + 4 = D, or if you have an A; change to E and so on

Once you make this change, you will be able to navigate through the Settings pages on the left display of your instrument cluster to select when/if your HSW will come on during Remote Start...like this:

IPC - 2.jpg
IPC - 3.jpg
IPC - 4.jpg
IPC - 5.jpg

Last Module to program is the Heated Steering Wheel Module (HSWM). When FORScan reads the modules of your Expy, you should see this:

If you are using a new module, you will have to program both lines of the HSWM to the following:

HSWM 714-01-01 ?000 0000 xx (the xx is the checksum and you don't change it, FORScan will change it automatically for you)

This line of the module controls how long the HSW will remain on. Here are the codes for duration:

Change ? To: 0-Disabled (Default-HSW stays on until you turn it off), 8-5 minutes, 9-10 minutes, A-12 minutes, B-15 minutes, C-18 minutes, D-20 minutes, E-25 minutes, F-30 minutes

Initially set the code to A, then write the line...later you can change it as required. (FORScan is set to initially recognize this line as 714-01-01 A000 0000 xx) NOTE: I have mine set to A=12 minutes and it works perfect

HSWM 714-02-01 02?? ???? xx (the xx is the checksum...see above)

This line controls the Internal Temperature of the Heated Steering Wheel

Change the ?'s to the setting of the Heated Steering Wheel you are using...I have a 2016 Explorer steering wheel, so I changed the ?'s to 5C 5C5C...this is the default setting of 92F for the 2016 Explorer steering wheel. You can change the setting to warmer, but you will shorten the life of the heating element in the steering wheel, so be careful.

Other settings for the Temperature are to change the ?'s to:

44 4444 = 68 (13-15 Fusion/MKZ default), 4C 4C4C = 76, 54 5454 = 84 (Mondeo Default), 58 5858 = 88, 5A 5A5A = 90, 5C 5C5C = 92 (16-18 Fusion/Explorer Default), 5E 5E5E = 94, 64 6464 = 100 (16-18 MKZ/MKC Default)

My module looked like this after I programmed both lines:

If you have a Used HSWM, then program the lines in the module as you require/desire...always be careful about setting the temperature hotter than what the default setting is for the steering wheel you are using.

Setting the temp to hotter will shorten the life of the heating element in the steering wheel.

I have my 2016 Explorer steering wheel set to the default of 5C 5C5C (92 degrees) and it gets very warm/toasty...almost too hot. After this first Winter of using the HSW I may revisit this Temperature setting to adjust to a slightly cooler mode.

You should now have a nice Heated Steering Wheel installed and functioning in your Expy...an option Ford should have had available, but you will now be able to utilize/enjoy.

And you will have a very uniquely mod'd Expy to boot :) Currently, there are not many 2017s on the road with this feature.

This mod will probably work very easily on 2015 & 2016s...please post back here when you try it.

Modding a 2018 appears to be even cheaper...it looks like the 2018 F-150 steering wheel is the same for the 2018 Expy...you will still need the HSW, HSW module, wiring harness, and HSW clockspring, but at least you could save some $$ by using your Expy airbag. Please post back if any 2018 owners update/upgrade their non-HSW Expy's...I know the HSW is an option on the 2018 and up Expy, but I'm sure not everyone selected that option when purchasing.

This is AWESOME!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am looking forward to doing this mod on my truck. (Also, rain sensing wipers.)

BTW, we had a 2016 Explorer Platinum and I agree the heated steering wheel would get pretty toasty. Perhaps a setting of 88 or 90 degrees would be perfect.

PS Perhaps the one last thing that's needed to make this swap perfect would be custom circuit boards to fix the steering wheel buttons. . .

Update: I’ve used my heated steering wheel several times since the temps are getting into the upper 20’s/lower 30’s. The wheel temp of 92 that is the factory setting for the Explorer is very good. The wheel gets very warm during the initial on time until the max temp is reached, then goes into a cycle mode to keep the wheel very comfortable.

Bottom line; I’m going to keep the stock Explorer wheel temp setting...it’s the right temp for those colder days.

Anyone tried this mod with one of the 2019 expedition heated steering wheels?

I was also wondering if the f150 raptor wheel could work too...
