Accel Ignition Coils

HI,

does anyone have experience with Accel ignition coils? i have a power on acceleration issue,flashing light under hard acceleration with a misfire, so i think i have a bad plug or coil. im replacing all the plugs and since im in there im debating swapping out the coils as well. Accel coils are only $150 ish for 8 and a motocraft coil is running about $60 each.

so, any experience with the Accels or am i throwing away my money and stick with motorcraft?

I don't have any experience with accel but I am using the msd coils with motorcraft plugs for over two years now. Like you I had a cool go out at 120,000 so I replaced all 8 with new coils and plugs. Solved my issue. I have used msd on other cars with no issue. Idles smoother and feels a little punchier off the line.

Why would you change the good ones, with Chinese replacements no less? Most OEM's last forever. Just replace the bad one with Motorcraft and be done with it.

With 120,000 on the stock ones, I didn't want to change one at a time as they failed. Just change them all at one time and have peace of mind for awhile.

Very often it's just the coil boot, or water that's gotten into the sparkplug well that causes the misfire. I would not replace a Motorcraft coil with a Chinese Accel coil. Has anybody sprayed water under the hood of your Expy lately ? When you remove the coils blow out the well with compressed air before removing the sparkplugs. You don't want debris to fall down into the cylinders. Use some dielectric grease in the coil boot when you reinstall them.

Either put some plugs in it and replace the rubber boots then see if all is good. If you have one bad coil you can do that then.
Or get a cheap set of ebay ones for under $40..I even see sets of 8 under 30 and put those in.
Keep you originals for back ups and test coils.

At 120K I bet they are still good.
You will have wet or oily boots and plug gaps will be wide.

I blow the plug well out with blow gun before I pull plug out. Lots of crap gets in there,

Get cheaper ones or better ones... $150 is neither here nor there

Or maybe clean your originals, there's some claims online that contact cleaner or vinegar and baking soda can resurrect them

On my 06, the originals were failing. After thw 4th one I replaced with Accel (all 8). 50k miles later I'm glad I did.

I had the same symptoms you had. Pulled the plugs and the gap was off after ~60K, went ahead and replaced the coil with Accel because I didn't have time to fix it twice (and the old coils had over 130K on them).

As was mentioned above, use compressed air to blow out the spark plug well. I had a ton of crud in mine (and that may have been the main problem). Either way, cleaning the wells, replacing plugs and coils solved my problem.

If I had more time in life, I would have done one fix at a time and perhaps saved money. But if time is not available, doing all three could very well solve your problem.

I replaced all of them with NAPA gold coils. If I remember, they were about $30-35 or so. My expedition is used for everyday driving and for towing 7500# of boat. I value my recreation time, so I did niot want to replace one at a time, and have another one go bad while towing.
I also replaced all the spark plugs when I di this, as it was about 95K miles on them.
This was 4 years ago and the NAPA parts are still doing well
Blowing out the debris is good advice.
Note: buy the plugs at a Ford dealer. They can look up the plug number on their computer based on the VIN of the vehicle/
