There is also an IWE solenoid vacuum check valve that should be replaced at the same time. About $10 Motorcraft.
Thank you. I'm having trouble finding the solenoid for the navigator. This website says this solenoid fits the 2008 expedition but not the 2008 navigator. These are the same vehicles so I assume this will indeed fit the navigator? 5c7b733056f6055554d4f2d9e1507d90.jpg

If all fails, you can call Tasca Ford and ask them. They'll use your VIN to match up the part. You can probably enter your VIN on their site and search from there. Or look up the part number and see the applications... Probably the same for the Navigator.

Their prices are probably about the same as Rock also.

I have to drive this thing to work tonight unfortunately. It's a 115 mile round trip. If I have it in 4x4 auto all bad sounds good away. Could I do this or disconnect the vacuum lines from the hubs and zip tie them out of the way? It's my understanding that as long as 4x4 doesn't engage on concrete, I'll be ok. Is it safer to pull the hoses off the hubs?

Is it safe at all to do this?

Also, this morning I jacked up each front and spun the wheel with the suv off and on. Both sides worked as they should (spun freely when car running and in 4x2 and engaged the axles when in 4x4. I suppose the weight of the vehicle could still cause them to bind up. Not sure.

Unfortunately ford made these hubs work the opposite way they should have. Vacuum at the hubs= 2 wheel, no vac =4 wheel. So disconnecting vacuum lines locks the hub.

Pulling the hubs isn't the easiest project so if you were to do that you would be better off installing new hubs while your there.

I had the same thing happen on my F150. It was a vacuum leak in the right front wheel. It should be repaired soon before it does costly damage. I don't remember the repair costing much.

Before work today I wanted to know if the axle was engaging while driving in 2wd. I could figure out how to tape my phone under there to get video so I used the old giant zip tie around the axle trick. It's spinning intermittently while in 2wd. The sip tie was smacking around when the other grinding/rubbing sound came around. Driver side front.

I pulled the vacuum hose and it has good vacuum on it. Hopefully change out the iwe and solenoid will solve the issue.

I will be driving it to work tonight since I don't have another option right now. I'll have it in 4wd auto so the axles will spin but 4wd won't engage. I'll be taking it easy on the way to and from work. Parts arrive Wednesday.

Thanks for the help everyone. I replaced the driver side iwe and solenoid today. It appears to have fixed the issue. The old iwe was not torn up in any way but looks original (135k miles). I drove it slowly around the neighborhood and there were no grinding/rubbing sounds!
