Anecdotal observation:

Side tailpipes (3rd Gen 5.4 Expeditions) rarely get fumes inside

Rear tailpipes (Gen 3.5 Ecoboost Expies, all 3rd & 3.5 Gen Navigators) --- sometimes do catch own fumes in some conditions...mainly reversing hard or stuck in gridlock with a tailwind

Old side exhaust really is better

My mom's vehicle was included in the list of affected vehicles. I wondered if the Expedition was impacted to any degree as well. I do have a Defender low level CO monitor at home that I could stick in the truck for a couple weeks just to see what it says.

I remember the police depts complaint about their cruisers making the officers Ill. Just another stupid item that Ford either knew about and ignored, or didn't do enough research before sending vehicles to market.

They DO have a point about PD's drilling the ***** out of their vehicles, though

Nobody bothers routing wiring through existing orifices, mounting things to frame rails roof racks etc... they just punch a hole wherever

This seems to be a QA issue at CAP. Essentially, when at WOT, especially when recirculation is on, there is negative air pressure in the cabin, which sucks in exhaust fumes because the the hatch isn't sealed properly.

There are 2 stages to this recall and most will only have the first done.

But it is complete horseshit how poor the quality is at CAP. Hopefully the 6th gen doesn't suffer (although I don't have high hopes on that front).

Our 2014 explorer was included in this and it definitely had an exhaust fume issue. Everytime we would start it esp in winter it would wreak like exhaust inside the vehicle. It would also do it randomly during idle. That's part of the reason I sold it. That and the 2.0 Ecoboost didnt get anywhere close to 28mpg even while going 60 highway. Should of bought the v6

Law enforcement mechanics have been drilling, and rewiring this way since police vehicles hit the streets. No complaints to speak of up till now. When you've got to setup 2-3 police vehicles per day, you look for safe shortcuts. Nothing wrong with that It's just a bad design flaw that Ford needs to fix.

I eliminated the Explorer before I bought the Expedition for that reason. I believe it is not only extra body drilling that lets the fumes into the vehicle, it is the engine compartment with the 3.5 Turbo front wheel drive used by police and others has an overstuffed engine compartment with inadequate space/air inside. The Expedition with the same engine and RWD is the grand canyon of open area!!! and NO fumes.
By going with RWD as a standard on the 2020 Explorer Ford is figuring on solving the problem IMO.
