I eliminated the Explorer before I bought the Expedition for that reason. I believe it is not only extra body drilling that lets the fumes into the vehicle, it is the engine compartment with the 3.5 Turbo front wheel drive used by police and others has an overstuffed engine compartment with inadequate space/air inside. The Expedition with the same engine and RWD is the grand canyon of open area!!! and NO fumes.
By going with RWD as a standard on the 2020 Explorer Ford is figuring on solving the problem IMO.
No matter what the size of the engine and the engine compartment, the only way exhaust fumes could be drawn from the engine compartment, is if there was an exhaust leak.
RWD is not “solving” an exhaust leak problem.
