What amazes me about this engine situation is up till 2010, when they discontinued the Ford Crown Victoria, and the Lincoln Town car, both of which we had good luck with. The Crown Vic, through our Taxi company, and Lincolns through our Town car service. The Crown Vic's had the failing radiator problems, along with transmissions through the years 2005-2010. But engines didn't blow. They had cooling issues with thermostats, fan switches, and occasionally the dreaded plastic intake. I don't know what's different on these vs the cars they were put in. Maybe it's the oiling problems of the 2005-08. Anybody that's tore one down that failed want to comment.

Thats to bad, sadly you are in a boat many have been with these engines. There are no good answers, all expensive. Ford made a blunder with these modular engines and for the most part seems in denial the engines are trouble. I bought mine dirt cheap because of the same problems. I am too far from you to buy the rig or help you. But there are a number of guys on this forum and will see the post and maybe have some more ideas or help or buy the rig from you.
Sorry about your luck

Moose, good post and one I had wondered about.
I was viewing an article on best engines a few weeks ago, I just looked to see if I could find it again, but couldn't. Anyway this article had the Ford 4.6 Modular engine as one of the top 10. Reasoning if I remember correctly was the many. many taxis and cars this engine was in with high mileage, many 400k+. So at the time I ask myself, wow how can that be? The 4.6, 5.4 and the v10 are all on the same platform. Is it a maintenance thing???? I don't know, I certainly believe in maintenance after a career of maintaining equipment and buildings for 30+ years. I do believe these engines "can" be very good engines but much more complex then engines of the past, like the 350 chevy. The Chev makes everyone's best engines ever built and arguably the best engine ever manufactured, but compared to the Modular a very, very simple almost child like engine. Is Ford to blame for these engines and their related problems? Wow, again we have those who have put 250k+ miles on them with no trouble and then we have Dave, who originally posted this thread with 99k and dead so I really don't know. I think if I was Ford I would look at every individual case of engine failure and do what I could do to help resolve the issue with the vehicle owner. A quick check of the oil pan and under the valve covers would indicate an engine that had been properly maintained, or at least a fairly visual on if it had been happening. If like the other post we have on the Forum that it had been 16k since the last oil change I would tell the owner, too bad, so sad, have a great day.

Its sad these engine/transmission conditions happens on these late model vehicles, its certainly a financial loss to the families. AND it pushes good hard working folks away from Ford and American made products to Asain or Korean made rigs. All the 10 best engine/vehicle articles you can find are stacked with Toyota's and Honda's and their high ended associates.

Dave is facing some tough choices, putting lots of money into the rig or selling it for junk prices.

Or putting some heavy oil in it to see if it quiets down and sale it.

Greetings Ford Expedition EL forum. Not sure if this is best place to post but here goes. Purchased 2010 EL in Iraq from Ford Overseas Military Sales in June 2010. Wife and kids had use of it for half year before I returned to CONUS. Early engine issues with cylinders/coils on a couple of valves that Ford repaired under warranty. Recently drove to/fro Disney in FL to home here on LI. Car got good fuel economy (19mpg) at I-95 hwy speeds. Car had tuneup Halloween ‘18 at local mechanics garage and Mobil 1 synthetic oil change (5W-20) before road trip and again upon return. Immediately experienced noise from lifters and returned to shop. Garage performed free oil change with higher weight oil. But coolant leaking so both main hoses replaced. $500! Knocking so loud I returned again to complain. Waved off with promise to address sooner than later. Couple of days later I barely made it back to garage with check engine light glowing. Now preliminary diagnosis is number one cylinder valve dropped into cylinder itself. Any thoughts? Thanks, Pete

6 to 8 for a used motor with installation is WAY HIGH! Should be around 1500 to 2500 for a good used motor installed. Typically a shop.will charge around 800 to 1000 to install it, can't imagine not finding a good motor for under 1500... Check out car-part.com

Just looked at their site, you can find a good motor for under 2 with less than 100k on them and a warranty so that and another 1000 to put it in, new plugs, water pump, etc and you will have it done for less than 3500. To me it's money well spent. Besides buying someone else's vehicle is possibly just another issue...

God, that's a shame. Usually the problem with a dropped valve stems from a stuck lifter, or cam followers that dislodge. Did they pull the valve cover to see? Or just do a scanner balance test, and saw the low bank? How many miles on this motor. In the future it's better to start a new post in your section Ford expedition 3rd generation, or in engines. But no worries, the moderators will move it if it's a problem. I also agree, that shops charging way too high for a used motor. Shop around, you can get a much better deal.

As other have said, the 3 valve 5.4 engine you have has plenty of issues but can be made very dependable. What was the reason you took the your expo in to your mechanic. Was the engine knocking, not idling, sending error codes?
