I had the worst oil change of my life today on the expy!!!! I had it done by the Ford dealer and it reminded me why I won’t ever. Again.

I got under the truck and it started down-pouring, the pan bolt was torqued down so hard I had to put a pipe on my 5/8 box to loosen, socket set didn’t touch it. Filter was so tight I had to destroy it and crush it with chanellocks to get it off as the filter wrench couldn’t get it. All this in the middle of a down pour......just a vent LOL.

It amazes me you can’t pay people to change your oil properly.

How do you torque yours? To a value on a torque wrench, or eyeball it somehow, like a 2 finger pull on a short ratchet?

Glad you got them both loose now JE....that sure is a point-of-no-return once you puncture the filter to remove it......I always get a sick feeling right before the screwdriver is stabbed into the imobile offender!

On the drain plug I use my ratcheting box wrench and just tighten until snug by hand. On the filter I tighten by hand until snug and go another 1/4 turn.....that way no leaks and everything comes off next change.

I tighten the plug only as tight as needed to stop leaks and still be removable (years of practice). The filter I tighten as tight as I can get it by hand... No tools. I've only had a leak once in my 40+ years of doing this.
Havent changed the oil on the 07 Expy yet (just got it). Anything I should know before going in?
The Explorer is a joy to change. High enough that no jack is required and both the plug and filter are easy to reach!
My old 4.6 V8 Tbird was another matter. The Ford engineer on that one should be drawn and quartered LoL. It was low (my choice.. I lowered it) and the filter was impossible to reach without disjointing your wrist.

If you don't slam that dealer your nuts. We keep going through this same crap week after week. And a dealership no less. What's it going to come down to, an 80 year old man having to work on his own vehicle, because the 21 year old doesn't know how? But the idiots put Gilligan with a wrench in his hand. Old Gilligan can manuever his I phone or a Surf board, but God forbid he can torque a drain plug to say 25 ft pounds!

As soon as I bought the truck I had the dealer change it....I have no idea who the tech was. The owner of the truck had older oil in it as far as I could tell when I purchased. They also put 5W-20 in it which I’m not a fan of, I run 5-30 normally.

Whenever I buy a used vehicle I “flush” the engine anyway, so I switched it to the slightly heavier oil as well. Probably does nothing but that’s just how I roll.

As far as slamming anyone.....no thanks it won’t solve anything. It’s over. Had it not been raining I would have been less PO’d I’m sure.

I’ll slam them by not taking it back :).
