I had the worst oil change of my life today on the expy!!!! I had it done by the Ford dealer and it reminded me why I won’t ever. Again.

I got under the truck and it started down-pouring, the pan bolt was torqued down so hard I had to put a pipe on my 5/8 box to loosen, socket set didn’t touch it. Filter was so tight I had to destroy it and crush it with chanellocks to get it off as the filter wrench couldn’t get it. All this in the middle of a down pour......just a vent LOL.

It amazes me you can’t pay people to change your oil properly.


I bought a new 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4 - my first Ford in 40+ years of driving and vehicle ownership.

Twice, the selling dealership “factory trained technician” put 5W20 oil in the engine, instead of the required 5W30. Another time, the same dealership also put in eight quarts of engine oil, instead of the required six. When I spoke to the service advisor about the 5W20 oil - he said his “guys” weren’t used to the 5W30 oil yet.

I no longer go to that dealer for anything.

I went to a second Ford dealer for the “works” oil change package (I had four major surgeries and can no longer perform certain tasks). When I got home, I noticed the large, underbody engine shield was hanging down and not fastened. Back to the dealer to “get it done right”.

I’m now using a third dealer for service. It amazes me that the owners of dealerships haven’t figured out that poor service drives customers away.

As soon as I bought the truck I had the dealer change it....I have no idea who the tech was. The owner of the truck had older oil in it as far as I could tell when I purchased. They also put 5W-20 in it which I’m not a fan of, I run 5-30 normally.

Whenever I buy a used vehicle I “flush” the engine anyway, so I switched it to the slightly heavier oil as well. Probably does nothing but that’s just how I roll.
That makes perfect sense. I should have figured that out without asking.

None of my business, but I would let the dealer know. In a positive manner. I take the attitude that a good business manager WANTS to know that stuff. Usually when I share good info like that with them they are very appreciative (not always) and it helps build the relationship. Nobody is perfect (I'm an good example of that) and feedback is a step towards improvement.

Is there a torque spec for the oil filter and drain plugs? Just curious.

Doubt I'll even do oil changes on my Expedition but my lil Honda roadster has a specific torque for both the filter and plugs and I use a torque wrench on both. Easy enough to do.

20 ft pounds on the drain plug. A bit of fresh oil around rubber gasket so it doesn't stick or crack, then spin it down till snug, then 1/4 turn past that. No, I repeat no filter wrench or cup wrench to tighten down. In 50 years of doing this from 1960- Currently, never had a oil filter, Car or Motorcycle come loose. If your a worry wart, recheck snugness a day or two after oil change. Bottom line, don't over tighten either the filter or plug. It's an easy job, don't overcomplicate it.

I have seen two filters loose in my life! One on a Geo tracker and another on Town car. I assume both done at quick change places due to the odd brand of filters.
Both leaking a little on the ground and when I touched them they moved. Didn't even have to try to turn them as they were barely touching gasket to metal.
Someone must have spun them on without giving hand snug at least.
