First Oil Change

I use Castrol Edge. I was concerned that Mobil 1 did not meet the specs on the 2019 Navigator. I called Mobil 1 in March and they said that their oil is not currently certified to the newer spec. Castrol Edge was certified.

I use only full synthetic in my vehicles. Ford uses sensing technology which varies your oil life based on the conditions you drive in. I always do my first oil change at around 1500 miles because I think it can remove metal particles form the engine manufacture. It is not too expensive and I don't mind paying for it even if it isn't necessary.

I currently have just over 3000 miles on my vehicle. I plan to use the oil life indicator to determine when the next oil change should be. However, I will probably change when 75%-80% of the oil life is used up. I always change the oil in my vehicles a little more often than the factory recommended interval.

I use Penzoil Platinum 5W-30 in my '18 Raptor as well as the kid's 2007 and 2010 F-150 FX4s. The 2007 has 225k on it and will still knock down 18-19mpg on the highway if I don't let the kids drive it LOL.

Everything gets a change at 5000mi as well as rotating and balancing the tires and aligning the front end. Firestone lifetime alignments get used every single time.

Simple maintenance can extend the service life of your vehicle in my experience.

The 3k mike oil change interval for the most part went out the window many years ago.
So We’ll have to agree to disagree.
Yes turbos get hot and start stop is a terrible idea anyway you look at it but under normal driving conditions these two things nor is anything else breaking down a synthetic blend at 5k miles.
It is just not and I have done plenty of oil analysis over the years that show my oil has not degraded in a fashion to be an issue. Nor have I had an engine oil related issue.
Ford recommends 12 month or whenever the computer tells you to swap your oil using a synthetic blend on these motors. If synthetic was needed Ford would require it. I change at 5k and I have yet to be below 40% on this rigs oil life meter. I have not done an analysis on this truck yet but I am due for an oil change here in about 500 miles an I’ll post the results.
Yes, synthetic is better in certain applications but only when you surpass the capabilities of a synthetic blend is it worth the extra money. And I have found zero indication that regular daily driving does that.
You mention fleet and performance absolutely a great place for synthetic.

Just like the intel i7 processor blows an AMD A8 out of the water in processing power but the added cost only comes at a certain threshold.
The i7 I have in my dedicated security camera system is needed to keep up with multiple continuously recording high definition cameras.
I’d be doing nothing but wasting money even though technically speaking it is a better processor in every way by having it in my office computer that does nothing but internet browsing and word processing.

synthetic oil can handle higher pressure and temperature, so it is better for the engine in the long run. however, if the manufacturer recommends s synthetic blend and you plan to change every 3000-5000 miles then go for it if you drive your car moderately. but if your driving while pushing the engine to its limits either towing or revving high, or even if you plan to increase the changing intervals, then you must go with higher grades of full synthetic oils. just focus on the viscosity an do not deviate from the manufacturer recommendation (5W-30 for the ecoboost)

i have used both types in the past, you can tell that the oil drained from the car is much better looking in the full synthetic rather than the blend.

Dollar General 10W-30 since it BOTH lubricates and protects your engine. Says so right on the bottle.

Most competitors are good at only one or the other, The General one does both.


Every other oil change I substitute a quart with this



Been doing this since the late 1800's & have over a trillion miles.
Ford keeps calling me from blocked numbers wanting to know my secret, but I don't answer.


I only change my oil on Tuesdays during daylight savings, Thursdays on standard time.


All other opinions suck.

Guys - just change your oil and filter on occassion. Opinions are like @$$holes, everyone has one and they all stink.

Every forum needs a good oil change thread lol. Thanks for all of the opinions guys. I ended up using a full synthetic that exceeds the Ford requirement. It was only a few bucks more and I'm going to push it to 10K for every change.

Well your oil life is based off how u drive. Your computer will tell u when it’s ready to change. U can use full synthetic and run the piss out of the truck and it will only last a couple thousand miles.

We bought our 2005 Expy about 2 years ago with 110k miles. The first thing I did was change all the fluids, except for the antifreeze, over to Amsoil. At just under 1k miles I pulled the dipstick. There was no oil on it. It ended up taking 3 quarts to bring it back up to the full mark. Granted I have a couple more miles on my odometer than the rest of everyone here but that was RIDICULOUS! Since then, I have changed over to Mobil 5000 at 3k intervals with a Fram filter. At every oil change it's roughly 3/4 quart low. I have heard a few times that switching a high mileage engine over to synthetic will cause it to use oil. I'm not sure if anyone else has ever experienced this and sorry in advance for sidetracking your post.

Well everyone has a different opinion, but at least you guys are more civil than the jerks on the Raptor forum. I changed my 2018 Expedition at 10,000 miles like Ford says to, which is also when the computer was at 5% oil life. I used the Ford Motorcraft blend like the manual says and the Ford filter.

On a family hauler like this I don’t see the point in deviating from what Ford says. I guess if you want to squeeze every last mile out of the engine until it’s dead, be OCD and old school with the intervals. We will move on to a new SUV before this one hits a 100K miles, so I bet what Ford says about oil changes will be more than fine. The previous 2 Lexus vehicles the wife drove were also 10K mile intervals. I followed the manual on those.

I had a corvette before the Raptor and per the manual it was 3K mile intervals with full synthetic. I followed the manual. As for the Raptor, I did change it at 5K, but I was getting close to a year. Manual says 10K and Ford motorcraft blend just like the Expedition. I used full synthetic because they didn’t have the motorcraft blend in stock. If they did, I’m not sure what I would have bought after staring at the oil in Walmart way too long.

The people that deviate from the manual because of what their parents taught them or because they feel better about it get peace of mind. The people that follow the instructions are just doing what Ford tells them to do. It’s not politics or religion...it’s no big deal.

I was just glad the Expedition has a metal drain plug, instead of the plastic one on the Raptor.
